California is near Bankruptcy as are some other states.
I doubt your statement "I'm sure the states have plenty of money" can be backed up.
Then the states needs to set priorities. The pig Federal is dead;has no pork and states need to be prepared to assume responsiblity for many things within their states. The US is deeply in debt. They can for instance take out insurance polcicies like we do locally for our workers in city government. Then one dollar from everyt raffic fine goes to state fund for police and fire families fund killed in line of duty.We also have free college education for any child of one killed at any state supported college.
I'm sure the states have plenty of money to do that, That would be like telling them to maintain their own highways. What a laugh, lower taxes on trhe rich and take from Police and Firemen
Economy: Blue States Worse Than Red Under Obama
Fri, May 04 2012 00:00:00 E By JOHN MERLINE
Among the findings:
Job growth: The average increase for blue states was just 1.2% from June 2009 — the official start of the economic recovery — to March 2012. For red states, it was 1.9%. The national average was 1.8%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Unemployment: The jobless rate in March was 8.5% in blue states and 7.4% in red states, BLS data show.
Income: Blue states also did a bit worse when it came to per cap ita personal pay, rising 4.27% in 2011 compared with 4.35% in red states, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis data
GDP: The one measure where blue states outperformed was in gross domestic product growth, clocking an average 2.5% increase from 2009 to 2010 vs. red states' 2.2%. State GDP figures for 2011 won't come out until June.
Home prices: People living in liberal areas suffered the most when it came to housing prices. Over the past year, the housing price index fell 3.5% in blue states. The index edged up by 0.03% in conservative states. Nationwide, it was down 2.4%, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency's House Price Index. Over the past five years, housing prices in red states fell 7.5%, but by 18.5% in blue states.
Gas prices: Blue states also suffer when it comes to gasoline. All but one of the 10 most expensive gas states voted for Obama in 2008. In contrast, all but one of the 10 cheapest gas states voted for McCain, according to gasoline price data from the AAA's fuel gauge report. On average, blue state prices were 5% higher than those in red states.......
Teachers, firefighters and policemen are not federal employees. You pay property taxes either directly or as part of your rent to support the ones you've hired. Your beef is local. It's the Democrats who keep dragging them into the federal conversation. If you want them to have what they want pay more state and local taxes.
Precisely, and that is Senator Coburn's chief objection:
“I have serious federalism concerns with a federal program that provides state and local employees with death and disability benefits.”
“Instead of expanding a program that is not the responsibility of the federal government, we should be working to terminate it.”
I completely agree with the Senator. It is clearly an overreach of the federal government that should never exist. It is nothing less than an usurpation of the State's financial liability by the federal government.
Unfortunately, the same bill already passed the supposedly GOP controlled House. H.R. 4018, "Public Safety Officers' Benefits Improvements Act of 2012", was sponsored by Rep. Michael G. Fitzpatrick (PA-8), and was passed by the House on June 27, 2012. It was agreed to by a full quorum of the House without objection, so there was no vote.
Perhaps where you live they are well paid, others not so much. Most of the Firemen in this country are volunteers.
I'd like to see your source for your statement that most firemen are volunteers. I really would. In Clark County, Nv, firefighters average over 100K with Captains and Chiefs can be over 200K.

You live in/near Vegas, What about the rest of Nevada. Who are the Fire Departments there. There are many times more rural and even suburban firefighters. Perhaps if you move to Scranton PA. As it is you're fair share is coming from the Casinos
Besides the argument is NOT about Supervisors Salaries, it is about cutting off Insurance Benefits to Survivors. Salaries are already paid for by the county

I'm sorry, I didnt realize the federal government was flush with cash.. Clearly the $1.5T deficits arent high enough for you..
