Also, that 51% don't pay taxes is playing loose with the facts. In reality the percentage of Americans not paying any federal taxes is closer to 17%.

Frankly, I would think that the more pressing concern is why so many working Americans have seen such a decline in their hourly wages in light in the steep rise in corporate profits.
A good part of that steep rise is due to foreign profits, not US profits so you can't take all of those profits as coming from the US.

Wages have not kept up with inflation is the simple answer. Food/energy/housing is not counted in the CPI. Food/energy has gone up though and we don't have much of a choice there ...we spend the money there and have little left over.

Food/energy are my biggest monthly expenses and that's what I have to keep an eye on to stay within my budget. If they go up then something else has to get cut. And I know I'm not the only one doing this as I see more and more buying the store brand then the national brand when I shop. And my store has expanded what they offer under their store brand now.
I can get a 12 pack of store brand soda for $2.50. Can't beat that with a national brand like Coke or 7-Up..they are near $4.00 for a 12-pack.

Please remember welfare is cheaper then revolution. So keeping the poor from being completely frustrated is a good investment.

In my own case I prefer to get a refund instead of having to borrow money to pay a tax bill. Besides with current interest rates letting the government have the use of my money for free is hardly any different from putting it in a CD.

I propose for all you that truly want to help the poor, when you do your tax returns, reject your refunds..Therefore the Government will have more funds to distribute to the needy..
The biggest part of government entitlement programs is Social Security and Medicare. They are also the biggest part of the federal budget. Next comes defense spending.

You could cut every "social program for the poor" tomorrow and you would have reduced federal spending by only 13%. That's not really going to solve the deficit issue and it ends up creating more problems such as every greater social inequality and fewer educational opportunities than exists in this country today. Not exactly the greatest way to promote social mobility.

If you are serious about reducing federal spending then if you are not willing to also talk about reducing spending on Social Security, Medicare and defense, I can assume you are not really ready to have a serious conservation about this issue.

The income used for Social Security and Medicare taxation is only the first $108,000 or so a person makes. One way close the shortfall in Social Security and Medicare is to raise the level of income that's exempt.

It's a lot easier to just throw poor people under the bus and blame the problem related to federal spending on them.

This is America. We abandoned the American Dream decades ago.

Why let facts get in the way of ideology?

Sales, payroll, state income aren't taxes?

Did you fully read your own link ?

They went into payroll taxes and the "total tax burden".
That 51% number is only for Federal Income Tax which they didn't refute at all.

They said those high numbers were due to the "unique circumstances" which was our "Great Recession".
Say what you will as to WHY they occurred does not change the fact that they did occur.

From your link:
The 51 percent and 46 percent figures are anomalies that reflect the unique circumstances of the past few years, when the economic downturn greatly swelled the number of Americans with low incomes.

True but not really germane to my point which is if the earnings of America workers is declining in real terms, yet corporate earnings are rising, then some folks are reaping greater benefits from American society than others which in a saner period of American history would clearly point out who should pay the largest share of the burden in support of that society.
