every couple already married would have to pay the one time 25 dollars for the civil union license to gain the tax benefits (i'd rather pay a one time fee of 25 bucks to shut the gay marriage lobby down for good) than allow the gay marriage lobby to undermine our beliefs.
i'm willing to bet if this option were presented, the gays wouldn't go for it. proving once and for all that gay marriage was never about equality, but dominace and control of the churches.

time to call their bluff.

Actually I have heard many homosexuals say this same thing. I would be perfectly fine with this solution, as the government would be treating all of us the same. What I don't agree with is having two separate unions that are supposed to have the same rights. As has been shown REPEATEDLY civil unions/domestic partnerships are not treated the same even in states where the law says they are supposed to be, and the federal government doesn't recognize civil unions/domestic partnerships.

If the word is what it is about, why do states keep voting to deny even civil unions to same sex couples?

*An intolerant opponent of Proposition 8 even violently attacked & injured a Proposition supporter in Oct. 2008.
*On November 19, 2008, eHarmony, a Christian-based matching service was forced by New Jersey's Division on Civil Rights to provide website matching services for homosexuals.

Children have the right to not be taught homosexuality in school. Yet, in places where gay marriage has been enacted, these rights have been infringed upon...

*Freshmen were told not to tell their parents about a pro-gay seminar & were required to sign a confidentiality agreement (Derrfield, Illinois Mar. 2007).
*In March, 2007, a Massachusetts high school banned parents from attending a seminar for students on how they can know they are homosexual.
*In October, 2008, First graders (6 year-old students) were taken on a field trip to watch their lesbian teacher's wedding.
*In Oct 2008, a Hayward CA public elementary school celebrated "Coming Out Day."

Normalizing & even encouraging children to explore homosexuality obviously causes more to experiment with homosexuality.

That's not a basic truth though. Nature very often provides same-sex "mating" couples with offspring - and in many species these same-sex parings do a much better job of raising young to survive into adulthood.
