I did find an article that says the ammo is going to Baltimore to their Criminal Investigation Unit.
This must be their LE branch that has to go out and get the bad guys collecting SS/medicare when they don't qualify.

Except certain areas of expertise in the military your lucky they let you shoot at all.

One of the reasons they shifted from the 30-06 to the .223 was the fact that most recruits just never got enough range time in to actually shoot a more substantial caliber.

Even the court officers here must go through 1000 rounds each a year easily

Much ado about nothing. There are likely a lot of us using frangible ammunition for home protection, critical defense ammunition for personal protection/concealed carry and it would be foolish and short-sided of any security and/or enforcement agency to carry less.

Exactley my point. The article attempts to make some feeble political point but anyone with an understanding calls bull crap on these kinds of articles.

I shoot around 100 rounds a week, often more, and my wife about 50. That's more than I shot on a regular basis in the military and as a peace officer. It takes constant practice to develop and maintain an "edge" and I would hope that agencies would do no less. We do it mostly for fun. They have a more serious purpose.

As far as i know and thats very little about ssa security the daily guard duty is contracted out i think.

Not sure whats provided by ssa as far as ammo.

But ssa does maintain their own armed criminal investigation unit.
When i was an active shooter i would say 1,000 rounds a year was my norm for each caliber i shot. That was going once a month only.

Ammo has no shelf life so if they can save money with volume buys then thats a good thing.

Holy cow i couldnt believe how much ammo went up.especially the good stuff.

Without starting a political discussion does everyone who shoots remember the ammo shortage and prices we saw after obama was elected?

It was amazing how everything was bought up and the shortages we had.

Many agencies have been getting ammo bids now.

The Dhs ordered 450 million rounds. The nation weather service ordered almost 50k.

Seems to me they are just anticipating another run on ammo with the elections .

Can't all of you figure out that there are many offices, many facilities and many guards. So, 174,000 is not that much if you are talking about 50 states and how many facilities? There can easily be thousands of guards, with training consumption that is not much of a purchase. Also, you do not know the time period for the consumption of these rounds. In addition, the purchase was probably done in case lots with volume discount. You also do not know how many destinations this purchase is shipped or is it shipped to a central location for eventual distribution.

All excitement over nothing.
