I watched the vid clip of his mom being interviewed by a reporter and there were some phone-in's to the staion that they read off at the next news segmant and one of them went through the exact same experience without whining about it; he simply asked and was allowed to practice with a H/S team. His other comment was " what would we be listening to had he been allowed to play and couldn't perform adequate defense or run the ball?"

My nephew grew like that and was subject to light-headedness after exertion of any kind and his docotor explained his heart had not grown to the same extent and wouldneed time to catch up. perhaps they're doing this kid a favour keeping him from trying to move his huge frame around until he's developed heart and lungs to keep it all together.

I grew 6" in just four years, and for me it was the circulation in my lower back that needed time to catch up. I had terrible scoliosis when I was in my teens. My parents took me to see lots of chiropractors and several back specialists. Most of the specialists recommended surgery, but one suggested that my problems were the result of growing too quickly. It turns out that he was right.

That is why I think this kid needs to finish growing first, especially before deciding to do anything radical.

My brother had two girls about 15 months apart who both has scoliosis in Jr. High, but one was a gymnast and the other had to wear a back brace for a couple of years. The doctor who treated them said that the gymnast was so strong in the back that she overcame the scoliosis naturally. I do wonder about that disease.

I never had to wear a brace, thankfully. The chiropractors I saw gave me exercises to strengthen my lower back. My back stopped giving me problems, and my posture straightened by the time I turned 23.

Move him up a league.

My son is 8, and is a good 6 inches taller then everyone his age group, most he is taller then that.

But a 300 lb kid that would be playing against him would squash him.

Yeah, my son plays PeeWee. When a kid of ours is to large for the age group, they move them up a league size. Happened to my son, he couldn't play "baby boomers" as they were called for more then a year, they moved him up a rank size because of his size.

I was ok with that.

Exactrly. He is way to large to be playing with kids that weigh 135.

But neither he nor his mommy doesn't want him to play in his school league because he doesn't have experience and it might hurt his self esteem and he doesn't know anybody. That's where he should be. What better way to get him primed than to have him train and play with experienced players?

He's well over 6-feet tall. If you look at the pictures, he's got the body of a football player. Hefty, but not morbidly obese.
Sorry but I disagree. I have a house full of teenaged boys (5). Most kids that age DO want to play with their buddies--it's as much about having fun with their friends as playing a sport, and I think that's how it should be. When kids are very large for their age, I think adults often expect them to have maturity and coordination beyond their age, but you're still dealing with a 12 year old little boy in a man's body.

That's exactly why it's not safe for him to play with high school boys either--that isn't safe for anyone involved. He needs to learn the fundamentals before he plays with kids who've been playing for years. I understand the concerns of the league though--it's too bad that they don't have a flag football option where he wouldn't hurt anyone, he could learn the fundamentals, and then go from there.

Looks a lot like my youngin.
Soccer would make sense for him, or flag football, although that doesn't sound like it's available.

At 12 some kids can be very small and others very large, which is why most peewee leagues have both minimum and maximum weight.

At that age and stage in athletic development, the last thing we want is kids getting hurt. I was given the option to play with 7th graders, but in the end choose wrestling...
My boys play football and wrestle. I think this kid is too big to wrestle--my kids aren't heavy weights, but isn't the cut off between 220 and 265 for heavyweight depending on age? If he cut 50 pounds (and he looks like he could easily) it would really help him. He needs to condition with SOMEBODY to get in better shape and then go from there.

Frankly, kids this young shouldn't be playing football or any impact/contact sport in the ;eague or school types systems. There are plenty of sports they can play to strengthen their minds/bodies/balance without impact/contact sports.

I am not arguing against the occasional pick-up game in the yard or park but of the organized league contact sports for those under the age of 12. The US is out of control in youth league sports. We've seen the evidence for years of the harm caused by our modern "protective" equipment which ends up causing injury not necessarily to the child taking the impact forces, but delivering them. The brain trauma is uneccessary at any age but may be particularly harmful to growing skeletal and nervous systems.

In the case of this grossly obese child, it comes down to a matter of safety.

Just my opionion. YMMV
