They should get life in prison with no parole. The prison guards should beat them up everyday with their billy clubs. They should get taze sessions. Endless pain for the rest of their lives.
Wow. I agree they should be harshly sentenced, but this is the United States - not Iran, for goodness sakes.
The guy didn't die (although badly injured), and is recovering at his mother's house now... not to mention, the perpetrators were freakin' KIDS! We're talking 13 & 14 year-old boys, in case you didn't read the article. Do you feel all 13/14 year-olds who beat up somebody deserve your harsh sentence of lifelong torture too? Assault doesn't typically carry a life sentence, FYI.

I don't know, why don't you tell us? Assaults occur daily in this country (probably one happening right now), and very few of them make the news... so why is this one getting extra attention? Hmmm, methinks the whole premise of this thread is backwards.
These damn racial double standards need to die already. If a black man is attacked because of his race, and it ends up on the news reported as a hate crime, the same should be done when a white man is attacked because of his race. People need to pull their heads out of their anuses and realize white people aren't the only ones capable of being racist.

If it is determined to be motivated by race/religion/orientation/etc, then yes it should apply to everyone... but it isn't ALWAYS hate-motivated when a black person attacks a white person, or when a white person attacks a black person, straight attacks gay, and so forth. So unless we were there to witness the crime, we have to trust the courts will sort out the truth.

Here's the "funny" thing: Even if a white man does attack a black man for reasons not related to race, chances are the media will sensationalize it to make it look like it was a hate crime, but it would never do that if the races were reversed. The double standards exist; they need to go away. Period. Present-day white people shouldn't be getting punished and demonized for some crap their ancestors committed in 1492 or 1861 or 1963. The actions and beliefs of past people don't define the actions and beliefs of present-day people.

Isn't that basically what this article did too? They quoted sources as saying it wasn't race-related, but the writer's intention was clearly to incite racial debate - otherwise, why did this ONE assault out of a million make the news? So I don't think it's a black/white (or whatever) thing, I think it's a "people of different races" thing... when people attack or kill those of their own race, it's less likely to make headlines than the alternative IMO.

I agree, but the people them/ourselves are just as guilty as the media for perpetuating any double standards... and how exactly would you propose changing this? We may not be responsible for crimes our ancestors committed, but the attitudes ARE often passed on from generation to generation.
Kinda like the number of blacks killed in this country on a daily basis. EVERY murder is a tragedy. Regardless of race.
Yeah, but it's almost always Blacks killing Blacks so it becomes 'business as usual.' Where-as, these Black on White crimes become ever more frequent.

But hey, this is just another one of the MANY benefits of diversity and multi-culturalism.
Conservatives and Libertarians: These "youths" should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, even of that means life in prison or the death sentence. Psychopaths such as these "youths" have no place in a free society.
Liberals: These "youths" are victims of institutional racism and oppression, therefore I can empathize with these young men. We need to fight the justice system on their behalf and ensure that there are more after school programs available to "at-risk youth".
These are the two competing ideologies this country has to choose from.
of course we don't have to ask what would happen if the races were reversed. seems occurances like this are happening way more frequently yet not a peep from the mainstream media. this must be another Romney conspiracy.
