I've seen countless times (typically in the restaurant, fast food sector) where a minority owns a business but they only have thier own race working in the establishment. Here in Montgomery County, MD we have plenty of 7/11's owned by Ethiopians and that's the only race that works there; no exaggeration. I've never seen a Caucasian, African-American, Asian, etc work at a 7/11 around here. Same applies for Chinese restaurants, they only have Chinese people working there. So do minorities have to comply with Affarmative Action or because they are the minority it's ok for them to only hire their race?
Often it's family and friends working in a small business. I know what you mean and I've seen it myself but I've also seen it change when circumstances change, like when the owners kids go off to college and suddenly the waitresses at the sushi bar or chinese restaurant is a white girl who lives in town. AA doesn't apply because that's not the point of it.
Affirmative Action applies to protected classes (Civil Rights Act) and underutilized applicants.
Since whites, especially white males, set the standard, they are not protected by Affirmative Action.
That said, studies show whites are quite uncomfortable around blacks once blacks makes up a certain percentage of the population. I doubt any white people applied at or even patronize the 7/11 you're referring to.
It's also true that a lot of small businesses tend to hire families and friends and pay them under the table, so there would be no chance in hell of a non-friend or non-family member landing a job at those places.
I saw an employment ad for a security job at an indian casino. What caught my eye was that it said we are an affirmative acttion/equal opportunity employer. Then it said we will be chosing applicants from within the commmunity first, then native american applicants and then all other applicants.....lol.
I believe minority businesses should have to hire other minorities as well. I'm minority (African-American) myself but I wouldn't dare hire all African-Americans if I had any business; I'd like a diverse staff so my customers know that this business is for equal opportunity and any race can patronize my business, not just African-Americans, Caucasians, etc.

Who says a private business owned by a White person has to comply with Affirmative Action ? News to me.

Well that's all good and fine but you probably want to be sucessful if you are operating some kind of ethnic place (food, store, etc) and you should probably think about your target audience and what will bring them in. The law doesn't require you to do it any particular way but you can do what you want.
It is truly too bad that there is so much discrimination of any kind. I now see companies that see a minority that may be considered a "meets expectation" as promotable, yet the white causation who may be an "outstanding" as not promotable. Fires me up!!!!!!!!!!!!
People earn their colors on their own without any help of any other kind. Period!!!!!!!!!!!
That said I do get around and have noticed that many minority establishments do end up with family members on the payroll. That's Ok though as we all work to better the lives of loved ones, right? I will admit I am a bit suspicious, but I do keep an open mind. I expect the same of others, yet keep an open mind.
Tough subject for sure.
