You are exactly correct. To ask people how much inequality they are willing to accept implies that it is incumbent upon the government to redistribute income through punitive taxation or other means.
The U.S. should always stress the importance of equal opportunity. We are already all equal.
Until a government can GUARANTEE equal opportunity (in addition to "stress[ing]" it, whatever that means), it should have have ways to counteract actual realities of unequal opportunity.
I mean, there is quite a rift here because some people actually believe that simply being born (regardless of circumstance) is evidence of "equal opportunity."
Witht the exception of a small percentage who faced unavoidable roadblocks, yes. People come to this country , struggle with the language, struggle with racism and still make something of their lives. This is the land of opertunity. If one is left behind it is usualy their own doing.

Yes, quite different. When you ask someone how wealth should be distributed and tell them they could be in any category, any intelligent person would respond "everyone should be rich". Why would anyone respond "some people should be poor" when they could be in that category? It's a silly question with useless results. I would love to have everyone in the world wealthy enough to live comfortably. Who wouldn't? But that's like asking if you support motherhood and apple pie. Silly.
A much better question would be about how wealth should be attained. Ask people if wealth should be shared evenly regardless of how hard someone works or even if they don't work at all(kinda like socialism), or should their wealth be determined by their efforts (kinda like capitalism).
But the columnist was obviously not interested in that information. He was looking for a survey to bolster his agenda for government controlled wealth redistribution.
Your question is disingenuous because it assumes that if you are poor you don't work hard and that the rich are the hardest workers, which is complete nonsense.
He asked the right question and got the right answers.
The reality is that YOU roadking2003 do want a radically unequal nation. It is your answer. You justify this desire to have a radically unequal society by pretending it is about rewarding hard work.
What should happen is they should live a shhitty life. Not breeding would be a good start .
