... while right-wing Christian organizations remain completely silent.
Why? Here's why:
Quote:
The Rev. Scott Davis bought the church in 2010 and opened it to the community for services in 2011. Davis said he suspects arson because he has received many death threats in the past. "It's because this is a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender church, and people around here don't agree with it." Davis said he welcomes all people to the church, regardless of faith, sexual orientation or race. There are approximately 30 locals who attend on a regular basis.
Davis said the residents of the small, quaint town are very upset with the orientation of the church, but doesn't understand why someone would destroy the last historic building other than for revenge.
Oh, and for you righties who will be demanding evidence that it was arson:
Now don't you feel all warm and fuzzy, knowing a 160-year-old church was burned down, thus depriving 30 gay and gay-friendly people of a place to worship?
It is a terrible crime because not only was the church was a 158 year old historic structure, but because it served members of the LGBT community it was clearly done to send a chilling message of hate and intolerance to all members of that community and the general population as well. This is not the first time a predominantly LGBT church was torched, there was another horrific incident years ago in New Orleans (a Metropolitan Community Church) in which several people died in the fire.
We should always be mindful that crimes like this of hate and terror are committed by seriously sick people. I hope no one is suggesting that just because someone holds a conservative point of view or do not support gay rights that they approve of setting fire to churches or other buildings that serve the LGBT community. One does not chastise all Christians because one wacko guns down innocent Sikhs while in their temple.
This story does remind us though that are dangerous hateful bigots out there that are no different than the KKK or the American Nazi Party.

That's exactly what the OP is doing.
Gotta fight bigotry of a lone nutjob with the bigotry against large groups of christians apparantly?
P.S. For the OP, Fred Phelps of the Westboro Bapitist Church was active in the democratic party, including being a Gore fundraiser once upon a time.

As a Constitutionalist, who votes more republican than democrat, I can tell you MOST ANY crime is hate crime. Not many are committed because you love someone. (note I said NOT MANY, I am sure that some have been committed for reason other than hate).
if it's arson, it's arson, find the perps, and hold them responsible. Here's a good punishment. Sentence them to jail time, and work release, to help rebuild it. Their total jail time equal to 20x the time it takes to rebuild. If it takes 2 months to rebuild, (with their help), they serve a total of 40 months.
Hardly -- as Clark Park stated above, there have been other similar church arsons. My mom volunteers at such a church in Maine, and frankly this makes me fear for her safety.
Pointing out that mainstream conservative Christian orgs haven't condemned this attack is hardly expressing "bigotry." At worst it's just the sort of "gotcha" statement that has become the specialty of so many posters here.
And who mentioned political party orientations, anyway? Not me. Defensive much?
Anyone who would commit arson to burn down a church for whatever reason has a "hate agenda".
"Hate crime" is quickly getting overused to the point that every crime is a hate crime.

I don't know anyone who condones arson, period. Really bad form in attempting to accuse those of faith who do not condone the normalization of homosexual acts as condoning church burnings, or mosque burnings, or anything of the like.
