A few years ago I attended a state convention... came and went at will...
mixed with all sorts of government officials... and was never asked to show
a photo ID.
Then when I went to fly back home, airport security gave me the third degree

Why would you compare a state convention to airport checkpoint security? Totally different set of circumstances, risks and vulnerabilities. I doubt they asked you for your ID because you had political buttons on.
Think about it, you do know that there is a reason why they don't want voter ID? So the dead can vote, so the dog and cat can vote, so people can vote a couple times
