The USPS doesnt process passports, they are actually contracted out to a private entity. Mellon Bank used to do them, not sure who won the latest contract..

The USPS is self funded and self sufficient. They receive taxpayer money, only to the extent that the federal law requires the USPS offer free and reduced postage for the blind and libraries.

In fact, the only reason the USPS is in the hole, is because the federal government bombarded them with unfunded pension liabilities.

I'll never forget the time I ordered 100 digital picture frames at $300 a piece, and the USPS left them all on my front porch, no signature, no nothing. I came home and found them all over the place and was astounded that no one seen what they were and walked away with them..

Free market alternative:

A package was sent to me from Nashville, TN by UPS.

It was trucked to their terminal in Memphis, TN the next day, then ground transported to Dallas, Tx that night.

The next day, it was sent to the local UPS terminal where it stayed for.....5 days. Over the next 2 days, they "tried" to deliver it to my house twice, but I wasn't home so they took it back.

I finally went to the local UPS terminal and picked it up myself. Total transit time from Nashville, TN to my house in Denison, TX (just over 600 miles).....8 days.

I run my business with USPS and they have never left a package outside my house , they ring the door bell or leave a slip if I'm not home to sign . But UPS? They left my 100 dollar box on my lawn, they never ring the bell, give it to random neighbors , leave it in the door in the rain,it's always a hassle with UPS . Fed Ex I don't know because they aren't that near to me nor do I use them

I get excellent service from USPS, UPS and FedEx.
Great service from all of them here as well. No complaints about the postal service at all!

What's it cost for UPS or Fedex........ oh wait they can't legally deliver first class mail.
