I enjoy watching 'Dr. Marton' on Public TV. However, between the gafaw's and laughter as I sit on the couch like a sack of patatoes, I can't help thinking seriously, so this is what Comrade Barrack Houssain bin O'bummer's socialized heathcare will be like. The doctors will no longer be polite and caring. Instead, since they don't have to think about the competition, they can be rude, sarcastic, gruff, cranky, abrupt and bitter. Since they don't have to feel responcible, they can knock-up local single school teachers, etc. and the government will take care of the brats they breed, or, the government can just abort the unwanted offspring, free. No responcibilty in the world for their deeds. They don't have to feel responsible if they screw-up in the medical profession and they don't have to feel responsible if they screw and knock-up some poor lass.
What makes it even funnier still, England was trying to boast how wonderful their socialist health care is during the opening cerimonies of the Olympics, as if that's all they can be proud of.
And here we have idiots in this country that want to be just like them!!!!

The problem with the NHS is that they don't have competition, by law. Only the NHS can operate emergency rooms in the UK and are always the largest hospitals, since by law, private health care are limited in their scope. There was a big stink about the Conservative Party changing the law to allow more private competition in the health care market, the unions fought back, of course. I don't mind having an NHS here, as long as private health care remains unrestricted unlike in the UK, Canada, and possibly, Australia. At least it does one thing right, it makes private health care cheaper thanks to competition.

I don't know any doctors who are caring anymore. They make you wait an hour and don't even apologize for wasting your time. They don't take time with you and rush you out of the office for the next patient.

On the other hand, my son has lived in the UK for the past year. The attention he gets from the docs there is incredible. He said they are so much nicer and don't try to rush you out. He can get an appointment within days whereas here it could take weeks. He goes to a medical center where numerous physicians are on hand. They give him antibiotics or whatever he needs right then and there. He doesn't have to take a prescription to a pharmacy to get it filled. Sounds ideal to me

What's funny is that all the people I know from countries with universal or socialized health care are aghast at our system, and wonder why we tolerate it.

It seems that the only people who think the NHS is awful don't actually live in the U.K...

It's because we are America and do everything perfect all the time and no one has ever thought of better ideas. Criticism is bad and things should stay the same forever.

/sarcasm

I don't have much experience being very sick or hospitalized, but far and away the most "pleasant" experience I've had with emergency medicine was in England at Crawley Hospital (very nearby Gatwick Airport). After rushing there direct from the airport I was seen nearly immediately, a friendly doctor got me feeling better right away with an IV and some meds, and then they ran a battery of tests. They had a group of female Spanish doctors in the emergency department for some sort of inter-Europe training, and they kindly asked me if I wouldn't mind be "doctored" by each of the 4 of them since I was the first person they'd had in the emergency department in a while with an American accent and it would be a good experience for them. It was kinda fun - certainly much more so that the standard emergency department experience of being bored out of your mind waiting for endless hours.

I was admitted to the hospital overnight. The orderly was a middle-aged Indian women who was hilarious and told me what to watch on local TV and kept bringing me treats. Upon check-out, I was told there was a bit of bad news - while the emergency department portion of my "visit" was covered under the British healthcare system (even as a foreigner), I had to pay for being admitted to the hospital and staying overnight. That portion came to a grand total of the equivalent of $400 (this was in 2003).

Cranky, abrupt and bitter? Have you ever travelled outside your little parish? England can boast about their health care system. It is far and away preferrable to what you deal with. Try them both for awhile and test them out before you presume to give one or the other an accurate assessment because of what your talking heads in the U.S. would have you believe.

Do you honestly think your idiot news agencies are going to be impartial in any comparative description when their advertising dollars come from how much Viagra or Cialis they can flog you or how much insurance they can convince you is necessary to prevent a financial catastrophy from befalling your family because you have a cardiac event from being morbidly obese? Get over yourself!
