KUNA : White House releases USD 1.5 bln aid to Egypt, meets Brotherhood figures - Politics - 05/04/2012

U.S. Foreign Assistance to the Middle East: Historical Background, Recent Trends, and the FY2011 Request http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/mideast/RL32260.pdf

Quote:

Military Assistance

The Administration has requested $1.3 billion in FMF for Egypt in FY2011—the same amount it received in FY2010. FMF aid to Egypt is divided into three general components: (1) acquisitions, (2) upgrades to existing equipment, and (3) follow-on support/maintenance contracts. According to U.S. and Egyptian defense officials, approximately 30% of annual FMF aid to Egypt is spent on new weapons systems, as Egypt’s defense modernization plan is designed to gradually replace most of Egypt’s older Soviet weaponry with U.S. equipment. That figure is expected to decline over the long term due to the rising costs associated with follow-on maintenance contracts. Egyptian military officials have repeatedly sought additional FMF funds to offset the escalating costs of follow-on support. Egypt also receives Excess Defense Articles (EDA) worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually from the Pentagon. Egyptian officers also participate in the IMET program ($1.4 million requested for FY2010) in order to facilitate U.S.-Egyptian military cooperation over the long term.

Jan. 2010 - Egypt, Arab Countries Sign Massive Arms Deals With U.S.

US airplane manufacturer Lockheed Martin has been given permission by the US government to sell 24 F-16 jet fighters to Egypt in a $3.2 billion deal. Congress was notified of the deal in October, according to a spokesperson for Lockheed Martin.

...
According to the Agence France Presse, Egypt receives approximately $1.5 billion in US aid annually, half of what Israel receives. Much of the aid given to countries by the United States must be used to buy American-made products and arms.

Until June 2009, the United States repeatedly denied Egyptian requests to purchase arms because of Egypt's record on human rights and democracy, according to website F-16.net. That policy has changed under President Obama.

Let me see if I get this. Acording to the underlined, we give them taxpayer money (or vapor money - we are $16 trillion in the hole). They give the money back to us. They get a bunch of weapons. This is welfare for weapons. They are not paying jack for this stuff.

The one American who deserves the most credit for the spread of "democracy" in the Middle East is Dick (Tater) Cheney.

No, it's not a theocracy, either.

And theocracy and dictatorship are not the same.

They are pretty much the same thing. A dictator is secular and a Theocracy isn't, but they rule the same way, with an iron fist from a supreme leader. You don't think Egypt is now a Theocracy? LMAO. WAKE UP! Have you heard all their imams talking about a caliphate and ruling the world?

Repeating from the article in the OP...

It should be recalled that the Saudis so feared the rise of a Muslim Brotherhood-ruled Egypt that in February 2011, when US President Barack Obama was publicly ordering then-president Hosni Mubarak to abdicate power immediately, Saudi leaders were beseeching him to defy Obama.

Imams aren't the government.

I hear pastors in the United States talking about politics all the time. They aren't part of the government, either.

I find it interesting that you guys are all up in arms over the situation in Egypt but yet supported a Dictator (not President) that the majority of people of that Nation wanted to go. I bet you miss Moammar Gadhafi also. The reality is you guys love and support dictators but then claim the legally elected President of the United States of America is one and needs to go. Talk about Hypocrisy.

A democracy without respect for individual liberty is simply tyranny of the majority.
