A Nebraska school district asked a deaf preschooler to change his sign language name because they believe the hand motion he used looked like he was shooting a gun.
The family of 3-year-old Hunter Spanjer said that their deaf son’s sign gesture violates the Grand Island Public Schools weapons policy.
“He’s deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy,” Brian Spanjer, Hunter’s father, told Nebraska based news channel KOLN.
What’s wrong with these people? Really – what’s behind the thinking that thinks this kid is making a threatening gesture?

Idiocy is behind it. The same idiocy that gets people fired for using the word "*****rdly" (see, even this stupid forum application censors a perfectly common English word - (n.iggardly) - with absolutely no offensive meaning), the same idiocy that gets a four-year old arrested and put in hand-cuffs for hosing down his naked twin sister in a yard on a hot summer day, the same idiocy that has police show up at a kid's lemonade stand because he didn't obtain a proper food handling permit, the same idiocy that gets a woman kicked off a plane because an emblem on her purse is in the shape of a gun.

The school was bombarded with phone calls, emails and threats of death. Here is another one that is as dumb or even dumber.
The Chicago -NWI Girl Scouts is being sued. The 12 year old girl who is profoundly deaf and signs ASL to communicate joined Girl Scouts in Kindergarten. And until this year her Troop Leader provided a a translator for the girl for all meetings and outings upon request from the mother. The Chicago -NWI group is the largest in the Midwest and it has a war chest of $28M; they can well afford the Translator. What this trendy group did was disband the Troop the girl belonged to and then blamed the mother for asking* for the Translator too often. Then they rewrote the laws that put the onus of paying for said Translator on the parents. She is god kid that is a good student, too.
*GSA don't discriminate on the basis of race, religion, or disability. The parent/guardian is supposed to ask for the Translator. It is supposed to be provided at no charge to low-income families. As far as I am concerned, they rewrote the rules to price out the low income girls out of the GSA. If it keeps that up Chicago will have another upper income sorority for little girls beside their exclusive country clubs.
The pro-bono lawyers filed suit about two weeks ago.
As soon as I read this story on Yahoo, I knew it would end up in a thread here!
I think most people (from all sides of the political spectrum) would agree this is ridiculous, and I'm glad to hear the school adjusted their policy accordingly. I mean, really.
