Ah, I've never been one to denigrate the conditions of other ethnic groups so I don't feel a great need to restudy or re-research something that I am quite familiar with which is why I don't make ridiculous comments like "slaves were too valuable blah, blah, blah. But thanks for the offer.
By the way, I assume you are familiar with African slave labor in the southern coal mines throughout the south and a major segment of the mining industry well into the 20th century and played no small part in the organization of the UMW. But you knew that.

While you can argue white immigrants enjoyed freedom the fact of the matter is they had to work under some very hard conditions or die hence the reason so many kids were employed in the mines. In these mining towns the mining company owned everything; housing, the stores, the land. They were paid enough wages to just keep them in perpetual debt. The common story is the man of the house dies in a mining accident and the widow finds him on the front porch of the company owned house with an eviction notice and a final bill from the company store.

Why are you guys always trying to turn everything into an us vs. them thing.....always talking about who was treated the worse.
White immigrants didn't have to come here, and moreover, could've simply went back home if the treatment was so inhumane. Slaves couldn't even leave their plantations without papers.
Don't be stupid.
Bottom line, EVERYONE had a hand in building the country. Why not just leave it at that?
Damn...some people, i swear.

I think you're missing the point, a slave was a capital investment. If you abuse your investment it loses value, if your salve dies you've lost your investment. For immigrant workers this isn't the case, if the worker dies or gets maimed the mine owner has lost nothing and just hires one of the other ten guys lined up to take his job.

Sounds like a plan but I would suggest you direct your comments to the OP.

You never heard of the "slave to debt" scam that was pulled over on many immigrants, have you?
