List of countries by military expenditures - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The US currently spends 5x more than any other country. We also send $15B+/yr to other countries for military aid.

The original cut of $487B is spread over 10 years, or amounts to ~ $50B/year.

The second $500B is a sequestration, voted on by congress (and led, in part, by John McCain) that would kick in if congress could not come to an agreement of how to cut spending or increase revenue. Even a supercommittee couldn't come up with a compromise that would avoid the automatic cuts.

This second round of cuts can be avoided if congress would work towards a compromise. In the meantime, we are also sending $52B+ to other countries each year as foreign aid...........

McCain Blames Obama For Defense Cuts He Voted For | TPMDC

Who's to blame for defense spending cut threat? - CNN.com

Not to say that Obama couldn't have tried harder to work with Congress and especially the Supercommittee, but with so many in congress refusing to compromise, this is what you end up with.

There is a lot of waste and fraud in the Defense Dept. and it should see some cuts. But the rest of the government needs to be downsized too. The massive amount of money dumped into the various government agencies the last ten years have not improved the quality of life for most Americans. A simple ten percent cut across the board for all agencies is long overdue. The elimination of the Dept. of Labor/Energy/Education should be done quickly.

Problem is if they saw a ten percent cut coming they would ask for an increased budget of 25% prior to the cuts so when the cuts are made they still net a 15% increase. That is how they operate. Cuts are usually cuts from budget increases not cut backs. FOREWARD as Obama likes to say lately. lol

From the OP's quoted source:

Quote:
The new military strategy includes $487 billion in cuts over the next decade. An additional $500 billion in cuts could be coming if Congress follows through on plans for deeper reductions.
Bolding mine.

Notice that he discussed two seperate defense cuts? The $487 billion is his plan, the additional $500 billion is congress' debt agreement. The second round were part of a 10% across the board cut to spending that would go through unless congress came up with another plan to reduce the deficit. And it was proposed by the republicans in congress. So yes, the GOP is once again spinning around and blaming the president for their own idea.

The article was about obama blaming republicans not the other way around. Try reading it again. Funny thing was at his little speech at this base he received a very cold reaction from the troops. I don't think he'll be spending much time at bases rallying his troops so to say.
