Why is it, that when people talk about diversity, they really only are talking about race, sex, Hispanic or not Hispanic, religion, and sexual orientation? There are tons of other factors or experience that provide for diversity. Plus, you can't say that if you break people up into groups based on the characteristics in the first sentence that these groups are monolithic. People of different races who grew up in the same hometown, for example, might have more similarities than people of the same race who grew up in a totally different environment.
So when people ask about diversity - do you think it's just about the characteristics in the first sentence, or it's about everybody have unique experiences and perspectives?

People how talk down diversity on this site are just racist.
Well yea, it's obvious that "diversity" isn't specific to just race. But when the word is used in the political sense, it automatically reverts to race because that's the most inflammatory aspect of the word. And with the nature of American politics being what it is (mean spirited), you shouldn't expect a broader, more meaningful discussion of the word.
Which is why i generally avoid the topic in personal interactions. It's not worth arguing about....and it'll surely turn into an argument. Someone is gonna say the wrong thing, and there will be problems when that happens. So it's best to just leave it alone.

You're probably right, but I'd be willing to give the OP the benefit of the doubt, as in this case they mainly seem to be talking about "cultural differences". Not everyone does mind you, and agreed that for some, they just can't get past "racial stereotypes". But IMHO many folks often confuse race and culture, aka "all blacks do this, all asians do that", etc..
Culture you can choose, race you can't. Which BTW, is why I would fault "Southern culture" so much.
