It was a real event, BUT, a small group of extremists, or someone looking to get the Israelis held responsible for something they didn't do is likely. The second, more than the first, since the Jewish people see Jesus as a teacher and a prophet, not the messiah.

Schlimiel is more accurate than Olam Ha-ba.

A better wording would have been that some of the Jews saw his as a teacher or a preacher. But most probably saw him as a cult leader. In his time (IMO) he would have been seen as a Reform Jew in the middle of a Orthodox community.
