U.S. Manufacturers Say There Aren't Enough Skilled Workers To Fill Job Openings

Clinton spoke about this last night. This is an important piece of the recovery puzzle. Why aren't we training these people? Romney wants more cuts to education? What is wrong with that picture?

Okay, also blocked by the GOP...

Quote:
H.R. 1709 – STEM Education Coordination Act – The acronym STEM refers to Science-Technology-Engineering-Math, and this bill would create a committee under the National Sciences and Technology Council, to create and coordinate education programs and activities designed to enhance those areas of study, and make the United States competitive again. Imagine a country in which we were training our own scientists and engineers, instead of training scientists and engineers for other countries, so that they can kick our asses on the world economic stage? Dare we dream? This type of program is small in scope, but it’s a very good investment, because we need people who are versed in science and math, in order to compete in the world economy. This really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, since Republicans have largely been anti-science for at least a decade. Oh – and once more, for those who think there’s a “fiscally responsible” purpose behind blocking this, this measure would cost $2 million per year – or about 2 cents per year for your family of four. They are also blocking H.R. 1736 – The International Science and Technology Cooperation Act, which would establish a committee under the NSTC that would coordinate with international science and technology efforts, with a goal of strengthening “US science and technology enterprise, improve economic and national security, and support US foreign policy goals.” If you need any more proof that Republicans hate science and fear the future, there you go.

Just take the funds out of existing budget. It is not like there is a lack of funds.

LOL..NCLB invested heavily in Math and Science over 10 years ago getting industry folks certified via their Transition to Teaching program.
Now the latest fad is STEM but without any government funding.

"Invest"..... If the kids still can't multiply by High School what makes you think they will go into math/science majors in college ? You have 6th graders reading at a 3rd grade level. These kids can't even read the words in a Math textbook and there's very few words in Math books.

Good luck with those future mathematicians and scientists..they will be H1Bs from India, not the US.

more nonsense from the collective.
either the individuals that want such jobs or the companies that need to fill them, "need to invest in education".
Leave my paycheck alone.

Set quotas for all federal funding whether it's grants, student loans etc. Problem solved.

"Imagine a country in which we were training our own scientists and engineers, instead of training scientists and engineers for other countries, so that they can kick our asses on the world economic stage?"

This doesn't make sense. If our training is good enough for them to go to another country and "kick our asses," why isn't it good enough for them to be employed here? It seems that a training program may not be tackling the root of the problem if the people beating us are getting the same training currently offered. It would seem that either we don't have enough people entering the training or that those that do choose to go elsewhere. Once again, this is something that's well intended, but may not address the issue. I admit I could be wrong because I'm only going by what's in this article.

But there is no existing budget. How do we get money from a non-existent source?

Yep, those sad acting corporations just won't hire just anybody for their jobs and there is no government program to train any more of them. I heard Clinton and thought at the time that he was talking out his nether regions but not many lefties would think that.

STEM creates NOTHING NEW. If we just got back to basics and taught Math and Science the way it used to be taught..memorization and rote skills instead of arts and crafts and movies then the kids just might learn long division.

I cringe when I see a 16 year old cupping his hands and saying "The alligator eats the bigger number" to remember < vs >. These are our future techies ?
