I posted this here instead of the religion forum, because it speaks to the heart of what some politicians believe.

It seems like this election season "religious liberty" is a hot topic. Rumors of its demise are all around, as are politicians who want to make sure that you know they will never do anything to intrude upon it.

So, as a public service, I've come up with this little quiz. I call it "How to Determine if Your Religious Liberty Is Being Threatened in Just 10 Quick Questions." Just pick "A" or "B" for each question.

1. My religious liberty is at risk because:

A) I am not allowed to go to a religious service of my own choosing.

B) Others are allowed to go to religious services of their own choosing.

There is freedom of religion and freedom from religion in these united states. And just because laws are unconstitutional, it doesn't mean they won't pass them anyway. The conception life laws, the definition of marriage laws, and countless other laws that are batted around intrude on my freedom of religion.

No chance in hell in passing huh? You take that risk. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

It becomes an issue when YOUR religion intrudes on MY liberty. Not my liberty to do harm to others (such as choosing not to observe federal nondiscrimination laws) but my liberty to behave as I will and make my own moral and ethical choices. That's why it's an issue. No one has suggested any laws that prevent anyone from exercising their own religion as they wish--no one's personal religious liberty is at risk. What IS at risk is personal liberty of people who don't choose to be affected by OTHER people's religious beliefs.

How do laws establishing the legal definiton of marriage or anything else intrude on anyone's personal beliefs?

Because it limits who I can legally marry. Since the definition is only defined by religion, it interferes with my choice of marriage partner.

There should be no federal acknowledgement of any marriage, but defining one over another is religious law.

Sorry, I apparently missed something, I agree with the bolded statement.

Bulloney.

With all the court cases dealing with ssm, has a single one ruled that bans on ssm violate the 1st amendment's freedom of religion clause. Not that I know of. I don't think ssm supporters have even argued in court that bans violate religious freedom.

Unpleasant fact for you --- not all laws that are supported by religious people are 'religious' laws violating the constitution.

Lightbulb An interesting disconnect...

It seems that the radical religious fundamentalists who are constantly attempting to force their faith into government at all levels are the same voices who loudly complain that their religious freedom is at risk if they don't succeed.

Some people feel threatened if ANYONE else professes to believe in some other religion, method of worship or no religion at all. They would use the law to force religious singularity on everyone. We are very fortunate to be able to believe any religion we want and to be free of religious domination enforced by the state. I like it that way.

Completely remove civil marriages and get the government out of the picture. Let two or more people enter into a contract instead.
Leave "marriage" to the Churches for those religious people.
