Combine that with 26 K a year in Social Security, in addition to the money saved up from never having to fund retirement out of his own pocket, and we are supposed to feel sorry for these teachers? They have a pretty damn good gig! Pay them the salary they desire and take away their pensions. Make them fund their own retirements like the rest of us.

They don't contribute to their pensions? Teachers here do.

Some Unions do some don't. I think they all should have to. Especially if tax payers pay their salaries. They want this and that and this, but don't think they should have to pay into their own benefits. Pensions and benefits, are a big reason why states have money problems and why residents are over taxed.

Even those that do contribute its minimal. My neighbor has contributed throughout the course of his career approx. 5% of his salary to his pension. Who wouldnt pay 4 grand a year out of their salary to make 50k a year in retirement. That is BS and must stop. My taxes in Illinois went up 2 percent last year and public employees are crying for more money. Unions in government jobs are a conflict of interest and hold taxpayers hostage. I am a proponent of Unions but only in the private sector. You want to be in a Union, work in the private sector!

Chicago teachers get social security? That's interesting to know, my parents (both retired teachers) didn't pay into social security at all.

They do not. OP is incorrect on that
Setting The Facts Straight About Pensions - Illinois Retirement Security Initiative

Do teachers get Social Security on top of their pension?
No, a decision made many years ago by the state ruled that Illinois would not be a Social Security state when it came to its teachers. Teachers do not pay into Social Security. In fact federal laws, known as Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) actually reduce a Social Security benefit a teacher earned in previous work and reduce any survivor benefits earned by a spouse. (These provisions have actually caused some people in the business world to dismiss the idea of moving into education.)

Who is asking you to feel sorry for anyone? Who is asking you anything? Obvioulsy you don't have a clue about your neighbor so why pretend you do then get mad? Find something in your life, something real, and get mad about that. Or better yet, fix it and get happy.

They are asking the government to give them more money from the Illinois tax payers.

Why can't Teachers in Illinois get market wage like other professions. Why can't they pay for their own pensions?
