At the US Embassy in Egypt the Egyptian police stood by and did nothing ... the Egyptian government is thus just as guilty as the attackers themselves.
In Libya however the Libyan police at least made a halfhearted attempt to stop the attackers so I will give them credit for trying. Also, 2 US State Dept. Bureau of Diplomatic Security special agents* were killed along with Ambassador Stevens and a fourth US State Department employee.
* some sources state that 2 US Marines (the US Marines have an embassy security force) were killed but now the USMC said that is not the case so I presume they must have been US State Department DSS special agents.

Invading an embassy and killing the Ambassador, means that the invaders aren't making war for the usual purpose a nation makes war (collecting loot and/or forcing their victim to change national policy). The invaders are simply bent on complete, unending destruction.
To put it mildly, they should be careful what they wish for.
This is a tragedy, but I can't help think about all the American idiots five years ago who said the mid eastern countries hate us because of George Bush and electing a new president would solve that problem.
If I spray painted a mosque in the United States, I would be paraded on tv as a monster, and have every hate crime written charged against me. Yet Americans are killed at an American embassy, and the silence from Washington is deafening.
