There is another thread started about Mitt giving his idea of what income translates into being middle of the pack.

I am curious what threshold you would consider to be middle income?

$40K-$80K a year I'd say is middle, while $80K-$150K is upper.. Over that you're doing well, ignoring of course where one lives.

It should also be noted I am talking about the income of a family. An individual would be different.

What I would choose isn't there. I'd say between 50K-100K is middle income for a family, no matter where you live as well, I think 100K is top of the line middle income pushing on upper class income actually in the country. I know some people will think that 100K isn't that much but that is because those people just don't know about cheaper housing options or how to handle their personal finances IMO.

I think the better question is what is consider middle class after taxes income.

For example: a family of 4 with 2 being children making 18k get about 10k back from credits, that bring them to about 28k take home page.

However, a family of 4 with 2 being children making 40k a year also take about about 28k after tax.

So in this example, family of 4 making 18k and 40k have the same after tax income.

depends on defination

middle for all america 60-80

but a workingclass cop on long island makes 108k base and averages 160k a year

a workingclass teacher here on average makes 110k

so a workingclass cop married to a workingclass teacher would easily break that 250k barrier

and a workingclass cop and a workingclass teacher would certaoinly be considered middle (not low class, but not upperclass)

We got rid of the working class and lumped everyone into the middle class.
There are people out there on food stamps that consider themselves "middle class".

What a joke! Talk about overpaid traffic enforcers, when cops in NYC and Philly are risking their lives daily for $37,000 a year.

You have to be well connected to even get into the Suffolk or Nassau police force and besides that, nobody in America would consider a bloated $160,000 per year salary "working class".

uhm first off get your numbers correct

a NYC RECRUIT makes 41k..his top pay (after 5 years) for a regualr PO is 76k...and with overtime and night diff the average NYC PO makes 95k-120k.....that's just a regular PO, not a Det, LT, SGT, etc

I would say $50-$100 (depending on the area you live in though). 100K in Iowa would be living high off the hog, whereas in San Fran it wouldn't be that much.
