you must have been asleep for asking such a lame question - hope you don't hear an AK-47 gun sound in your neighbourhood- wait a minute it was invented in a communist country!
Probably the most effective assault rifle of that era.
That may be one the finest weapons ever made and certainly the most profilic but I don't think it qualifies for an invention. If you're going to credit anyone for the invention of the assault rifle the AK is predated by the German STG44 which as I understand it heavily influenced the design of the AK.
Accurate? Not really
What the ak47 is, is reliable and cheap.
It is a sppray and pray weapon.
What Communist Russia did achieve are some outstanding fighter aircraft.
Reliable rockets for hauling cargo into space relatively cheaply.
The thing about inventions is that just because you have one does not mean you have the means to apply it to make it useful to industrial or private consumers. A lot of inventions never had their potentials realized until decades or even centuries after their actual discovery.

My uncle, while a marine candidate at OCS, was told over and over, it was drilled into his head, that the AK47 was the "ultimate" assault rifle. Yet, his instructors could have done this to make sure the candidates knew the AK47 backwards and forwards and to make them respect the weapon.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20. After much reflection, I'm sure the weapon has its flaws.

Have you ever used one in a combat situation?
Nothing that you wrote is true about the modern Russian variant...maybe the Chinese or those found in the Eastern or Southern African subcontinent.
They fire flawlessly (or much more so than the M4A1) with either brass or steel and are generally MOA to 300 yards unscoped, after that you'd be using something different anyway. It's not a match rifle. It does what it's supposed to very, very well.
