Whogo, my brother, white boy is derogatory and implies an incompetent white male who is a boy, who is...not yet a man. Okay with that terminology?
All of these are reasons why hyphenated terms for an "American" are unecessary. It should only be used for first generation individuals who come here legally and accept American citizenship. After that, those naturally born here are American. The very definition of hyphenating something is to divide or separate something, and it's not cohesive to being a strong citizenry. Hyphenating is even less necessary in an increasingly globalized world. One term, such as American, should only denote legalized citizenship, and not ancestry. However, in the cultural landscape, all groups should receive equal status when it comes to hyphenation, and if white people want to be called European-American to denote pride in their ancestry, then it should become as common as other hyphenated terms.
If it's necessary, you should feel free to use the full hyphenation: I am a Europeon-Swedish-Polish-Indian-American. Or: a Hispanic-African-Arab-European-Asian-American. Depending on lineage breakdown.
Your "tongue-in-cheeck detector" is malfunctioning. In addition, I had also intended to use the OP to point out the reasons for why hyphenation is ridiculous, as other contributors to the thread mentioned, and that I combined in post #25.
Thank you for bringing this to attention in this thread. As long as it is customary to define certain groups with a hyphen, I am in full support of such groups as provided in your link, and would like to see such groups gain nationwide exposure and receive the same respect as other hyphenated groups receive, and not just in Chicago.
Hyphenated Americans should be shipped to the county where they feel their loyalty lies, they sure as hell are not Americans.
"It's time to start calling white people European-Americans "
Why divide the nation up any further?
