Picky picky. To satisfy you the writer should have said war ships. But I understand the sentence that the writer was referring to the list of the war ships that would go into battle .
Well, words mean things.
The Royal Navy has most certainly always known the difference between battleships, battlecruisers, cruisers, destroyers etc. etc. They didn't coin the term "pocket battleship" to signify a very small warship - it was used to describe a class of particularly well-armed heavy cruisers.
The term "battleship" itself has come to signify different things as technology has moved along, but it does not mean simply "warship".
BTW - the Frigate USS Constitution is still a commissioned warship similar in age to HMS Victory. Both wwere considered Battleships of their time.
Frigates didn't form part of the Line of Battle, which was the distinction for a battleship at that age.
Of course, at the time, they'd generally be referred to as first-rates, second-rates or third-rates; by their number of gun decks (three-deckers and two-deckers); or by the number of guns. So a given ship could be referred to as a two-decker, a third-rate or a "74".

Sean Rayment is stupid.
The multi-national naval force in the Gulf includes three US Nimitz class carrier groups, each of which has more aircraft than the entire complement of the Iranian air force.
He incorrectly identified an Enterprise-class aircraft carrier, specifically to wit the USSEnterprise, as a Nimitz-class carrier and then he lied when he said there were three carrier groups.
There are only two US carrier groups in the Persian Gulf. The Enterprise has been on rotation in the region since April. Enterprise goes from the Arabian Sea to the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman back to the Arabian Sea ad infinitum ad nauseum.
Enterprise will continue through November, at which time USS Stennis (currently in the eastern Pacific Ocean not far from Hawaii) will relieve Enterprise. I mention that to cut-off any future stupidity and ignorance for the idiots who will crap their pants when Stennis shows up.
Enterprise will then set sail for the Red Sea, transit the Suez Canal, cruise the Mediterranean, transit the Strait of Gibraltar and then port in Norfolk.......forever. Enterprise is being decommissioned.
Eisenhower is the other carrier in the Gulf. There are no other carriers presently available, as all are either undergoing refit, refuel, or shake-down. Washington is right there in the Sea of Japan and she ain't going nowhere for now.
Also, the Iranian Air Force has more aircraft than any three US carrier battle groups. Sean Rayment is so stupid he counts ASW helos as combat aircraft.
Several years ago, a US surface group picked up the ECM on at least 50 F-14 Tomcats. My guess is they were rotating to FOBs. In addition to the Tomcats, the Iranians have F-4 Phantoms, F-5 Tigers (superior to the F-16), MiG-19s (modified), the Chinese version of the MiG-21, MiG-23s, MiG-25s, MiG-29s, Su-22s, Su-24s and Su-25s.
In addition to that, they have IL-28s and Tu-16s --- which will be launching a few hundred Kingfish.
I'd love to see all of those allied ships in total panic mode colliding and sinking each other in the very narrow very shallow Persian Gulf (especially the Strait) trying to get the hell out of the way of those Kingfish.
I happen to be familiar with operational plans for Iran, since I trained for the invasion of Iran, and it requires 4 carrier battle groups. So when you see 4 carriers in the Persian Gulf/Arabian Sea you can start to panic.
Outside of that, how about a little less puff cheer-leading and a little more reality, and a helluva lot more Truth.
You should put Sean Rayment and the Telegraph on your "Ignore List."

What authoritative body do we report to over the leaking of suspected classified information?

Tactically...

It's interesting that someone "working" in a capacity to be familiar with war planning would love to see our ships sank and sailors drowned....
