That's not to say I agree with the Muslim position on the issue (because I don't), but how exactly does one protect freedom by denying freedom? If France truly believed in democracy they would let the opposing side speak (peacefully) too.
It just goes to show that Democracy itself does not truly exist in our world. Are we no better than our "enemies"?

You are thinking of a Republic, not a Democracy.
The majority doesn't rule in a Republic, like it does in a Democracy.
Democracies are for Mob rule.
Demonstrations in our regulated societies always require permits. In a country that is so heavily swamped with muslim immigrants, I am not sure that I would risk having cities burned to the ground or innocent non-muslims be killed in order to uphold the ideal of free speech.
Unfortunately, muslim demonstrators seem to have a tough time keeping violence in check and perhaps France is simply taking the precautions they deem necessary to avoid a blood bath in their nation.
Democracy is, like Bent Bow, aptly remarked just another word for mob rule. It's the idea that the more numerous can dominate those in the minority and that there is nothing that the minority can do about it. Neither France nor the US fall within the boundaries of a democracy - even though some of our processes are democratic in nature.
Thus, even in the US where we love to tout the idea of democracy, democratic principles are easily suspended if a situation calls for it...
We suppress protests in our own country. Some even champion the beating of protesters. We shouldn't throw stones...
