So I've got this guy on my Facebook wall that I don't really like, but I'm stuck having him on there because he's friends with my sister in law. Real mooch of a guy. Has been on unemployment (funemployment, as he calls it) for like a year and a half now. Union drove the company he was with into bankruptcy, they got bought up and offshored to Mexico. Constantly posting stupid memes about the 99% and how it's all Wall Street's fault that he can't find a 90k a year job when all he can do is push a button or pull defective merchandise off a factory line
Anyhow, he disappears for like a week, which is odd because there are usually 9 or 10 memes a day from him. Today he shows back up boasting "SCORE! I've got an iPhone 5!!!" Some people ask him how. Apparently he camped out in front of an Apple store for 8 days. He was gone because he had poor internet access. Apparently, his life is the pits because of Wall Street, but he can still pay hundreds of dollars for an already-technically-obsolete phone. So I ask him how he managed to look for work and make his mandatory 3 contacts without internet. Dumbass posts back with "LOL they never check, I'm just gonna say I applied for 3 jobs. Wont be the first time and it wont be the last. Had to have the phone. YOLO!!!"
So I took screenshots of his wall. And called the Employment Department, said I'd like to report a fraud. Explained the situation. They asked for the screenshot. I gave it to them.
Scratch one leech off the system's teet. The fact that the moronic piece of trash was some stupid Apple zombie was just gravy. If only they were all that easy.
There's hundreds if not thousands more on "funemployment"......
I also know someone leeching the system. Hasn't looked for work and doesn't plan to until the UE ends but plays the game and says he's looking to the UE folks. With so many on unemployment they can't verify that folks are actually making an effort to find a job.
Not to rain on your parade, BUT as far as I know, the only requirement to receive unemployment is to be looking for a job. If he has proof such as online applications and phone records that he actually were looking for a job he won't be denied benefits because he was on line to buy a phone. You can do phone interviews from anywhere. And email resumes.
I was unemployed once and went 3 months to visit my bio mom in Germany and my case worker knew and it was never an issue. So if he has phone service (I doubt there was no Internet or cell reception where he was, outside an apple store of all places) you wasted your time

Which I'm sure he'll have, since he admitted he had no real internet, admitted he didn't make job contacts, and nobody is going to believe that he had his resume loaded on his phone. I mean, given tghat it was such an old hunk of junk that required waiting in line for a week to get a new one and all....
Reminds me of people in dictatorships, telling on family members
Kind of scary.
Not really.. I guess "See something, Say something" is kicking into gear.
They say history repeats itself.
