I agree with the OP's generalizations. I find the same to be true most of the time. Conservatives (by this I mean ordinary social conservatives) tend to be comfortable in their own skin and with their own lot in life, however humble. And they'll give you the shirts off their backs. I just wish I could have better conversations with some of them.

I have deeper conversations with liberals. However, they can be pretty hard to get along with. Even their fellow liberals walk on eggshells around them. Honestly, this is a tribe that devours its own. (There are exceptions. I do know some liberals who are very pleasant to be around and don't have chips on their shoulders. For some reason they are all classical or folk/bluegrass musicians.)

I will add that I actually get along much better with full-on liberals than I do with "moderates" in either camp. People with convictions tend to understand each other.

Most people of any political stripe are equally pleasant or unpleasant to be around. Ever hear of the saying that you should never discuss politics or religion in polite company? That's because two people who get along on a personal level might have wildly different political or religious views.

The only people who I can never be friends with because of their politics are religious nutjobs and nanny statists, but only because their beliefs necessitate that they force themselves onto others. Hell, I have even been friends with people who are on the exact opposite of my beliefs like hardline Communists, but I cannot be friends with nanny statists or religious kooks (Christian or Islamic).

Some of the liberals/progressives I know (there are just a few) tend to have a chip on their shoulder, waiting for you to bring up a comment that can provoke a debate, or let something slip that will give them an opportunity to call you a racist, bigot, homophobe, xenophobe, etc. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are a lot of people I know who have no interest in what is going on politically or in the world - if it doesn't touch us, it doesn't matter (we live in a very small rural town which is somewhat of a vacuum). Conversations with them are very benign ("Army Wives", who won "Dancing With The Stars"...), but when they do complain about the government, it can be frustrating because they don't watch any news shows other than "Good Morning America".

Pssst .... don't let this get out .... but a lot of people don't consider Marxist-Socialists-Communist to be a very patriotic ideology.

Default Liberals or Conservatives:Which do you find most pleasant to be around?

I prefer this guy, I just gave him a small amount of jif, and he's having a great time!
Conservative democrat conveniently not included in poll.
I prefer to be around dogs.

You never meet a decent nice Tea Partier, I've honestly never met one. It's hard to be a bearable person when you act like an anti-gay Christian bigot. Some religious conservatives are nice people. Liberals are usually pretty nice chilled out people. There's a few Alec Baldwins out there but look at the unpleasant right wing bullies on this forum to get evidence of the lack of class and humor. you generally see in conservatives

I have a serious problem with stupid people, bad grammar, ghetto-speak, etc, so naturally, I spend my time with conservatives.
