Imagine you're a Democrat voter from Arkansas or a Republican voter from Massachussets. The current, archaic system where a candidate with 50,1% of the popular vote gets all the electoral votes from a state leaves out the other 49,9%. Wouldn't be better if the electoral vote is given according to the percentage of ballots cast for each candidate?

A couple of states do a variation of this, with electoral votes given by congressional district. What you are suggesting is simply eliminating the electoral college in favor of strictly using the popular vote. There are deep political reasons the electoral college exists, dating back to regional concerns in the early days of the country. While many of those conditions have dissipated over the years, I'm not sure how united the country would be about eliminating electoral votes.

No, no, no, a thousand times No.

I'm happy as a lark in my non-competitive state where my vote for prez doesn't matter.

No way! BUT, if Obama wins we may be looking at the making the mason-dixon line a permanent line. We could be looking at a new country. The south WILL NOT allow his agenda to take hold. Not that I'm looking forward to another civil war, but a peaceful split might be in order.

I prefer a presidential election as a primary. For example, there are 6 candidates for president, the top two candidates who get the most votes then compete in the regular presidential election. What this does is eliminate the weakest candidates leaving behind the top two. The loser of the two won't have the complaint of "third party" interference like we've heard about Ross Perot and Ralph Nader. If a third party candidate can generate enough votes, then that candidate will be in the runoff.

Its time to scarp the electoral college all together, and go to a straight popular vote.

The only reason we haven't dismantled that idiotic system is the righties won't let us since it favors Republicans. I'm not so sure that's the case anymore and Democrats may reach an electoral vote tipping point where Republicans no longer can win like if Ohio or Florida become firm blue states. At that point the GOP hypocrites will have their change of heart.

I have some conservative friends in favor of a popular vote process. I don't want to scrap the Eectoral College entirely but I'm OK with the idea of giving the electoral votes to whoever carries the congressional district.
