France is set to ban the words "mother" and "father" from all official documents under new plans to legalize gay marriage and give equal adoption rights to homosexual and heterosexual couples.

Under the proposed law, only the word "parents" would be used in marriage ceremonies for all heterosexual and same-sex couples, a move that has sparked widespread outrage, The Telegraph reports

Personally, I much prefer the generic 'parent' so, I've no issue with this, as if it is any of my business anyway.

I'm sure that there is a practical side to it - probably reduces printing costs, etc.

Yes, I believe so. And it's not just about gay people (although I realize that makes for better "controversy"), it was done to address all families where the guardian/s aren't just mom & dad... i.e. grandparents, single parents, foster parents, etc. They found it was costing money to re-print documents whenever this situation arose, so it was easier and more cost-effective to use generic terms. Funny how people will complain if we're spending money to draft documents in multiple languages, but then this is also reason for concern. As I've said before, you just can't please anyone these days!

Change =/= ban. I will continue to point out this stupidity whenever it appears on CD. You will get to know me well I'm sure.

I can't say that I care much whether official document include a generic "parent(s)" or "mother" and "father." Obviously, using "mother" and "father" has nothing to do with being the biological creator of a particular child. Both mother and father are parents, individually and as a dyad. Thus, using the term "parent" is certainly more inclusive and likely accurate in today's times of divorces, adoptions, legal guardianships, etc.

Still, none of this seems even remotely reminiscent of a ban - it seems a bit more like France realizes that today's families come in a variety of set-ups.

What I don't get is this:

Oh, and the phrase you are looking for is "run amok" or, if you must, "run amuk" might also be considered correct. It has nothing to do with "muck."

This doesn't affect what the child calls his mom and dad. They will still be Mom and Dad.

[who cares what the official documents say?]
