All the First Ladies take up a cause during their husband's Presidency.
Many take up causes but only during the time their husband is the President.
The ones I admire the most are the ones that had causes before becoming the First Lady and used their position to further their cause and continued their cause after leaving office.

Laura Bush is one for example. She has promoted reading before, during and after her husband's Presidency.

Plus she goes to the Middle East and speaks to women about breast cancer and owning their own business.........she still does this to this day!!!

Also has spoken out against the oppression of women in the Middle East.........
Laura Welch Bush | The White House

The left complains even though Mrs. Bush used her 8 years to promote health issues and women awareness in the Middle East.....
The Left's Unnecessary Partisan Attacks on Laura Bush - Peter Roff (usnews.com)

"Twenty-two women," the Washington Examiner recently explained, "including former members of the museum's board, have penned a letter to the museum in protest of Bush's selection," which is being led by National Organization for Women cofounder Sonia Pressman Fuentes.
Their argument against giving Bush the honor is, at best, specious. "I'm not complaining that she's a Republican," Fuentes said. "I'm complaining that she's never done anything for women to get this award." Although I bet she feels President Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize Award!!!

I do give credit to Mrs. Obama for bringing awareness to people getting overweight. Just to bad parents are this uninformed when having children, that they don't know exercise is suppose to be a part of ones daily activities. Michelle would do better to get P.E. back in the schools and snack and coke machines out............

It may interest you that the majority of obese people in the USA are the poor people. You can pig out on 3 double cheesburgers for $3. Unlimited amounts of killer sugar pop for a buck. Completely contrary to what you claim, you are getting poorer and poorer and fatter and fatter. Maybe for some unknown reason you don't care one single bit about the health and welfare of the nations kids. That would be very typical of the average self centered person in today's society. However, the first Lady obviously does care and she cares greatly. Now, if it's not bad enough that so many folks just don't care a whit about the future of the country, they don't want anyone else to care either. It's worse by far than their selfishness. They are not only selfish but mean spirited, small minded, nasty azzhats who are threatened by someone with compassion.

To go along with what you're saying, the salary for being president of the USA sucks: Doesn't matter if it's George Bush, Bill Clinton, Obama, doesn't matter. Total value of benefits (salary+motorcade+wait staff etc) and cost savings probably top out around $1,000,000 total benefits package which doesn't do that job justice. You couldn't pay me $1,000,000 to age the way Obama has over the past 3 years, to be honest.

So true. Last night I was watching a local news story taking place in DC where people have no place to live. They were standing in a long line to get into some contracted-out shelters/apartments because all the shelters are closed. Most of them were women and the majority of them were, in my eyes, morbidly obese.

While I somewhat agree with you about the availability of such cheap low quality food, there ARE alternatives. You can buy boxes of pasta and canned tomato sauce, and even add some protein like chicken breast at about $3 per serving and that would be much healthier than going to McDonald's every day...not to mention the savings on gas and any related medical bills. Oh and soda? Water is always a better and cheaper alternative.

Only time will tell if she is truly committed to fighting obesity. We'll have to see if she continues this cause when she'd not the First Lady anymore.

Its an issue of national security issue. If many men are overweight, how do we expect to draft them if a major World WAR happens? I don't expect a 400 lb,6 ft man to be able to get into a helicopter.
OK. So let's focus on those who eat too much instead of those who eat very little or nothing because they don't have any food. Very smart. Very compassionate. Very Obama.

Geez, it's just a "cause." No one said that hungry people are being neglected. In fact, there's probably at least three posts a day railing against "assistance" to poor people, which would include feeding the hungry. How is focusing on people who eat too much "VERY OBAMA". WTH???

Obesity is a huge health epidemic in the country and it affects all income levels with effects that cost society tons of money, as well as costing the obese people and their families pure misery.
