Education is the key to having an educated populace that can make informed decisions about energy and economics. Education is the key to having employees and entrepeneurs who can work and create jobs in an increasingly technology-based world economy.
But education is long-term and it is difficult. It isn't appealing. We have a society that applauds a lack of education and glorifies ditzes. Look at the popularity and wealth of characters like Snooki, the Kardashian sisters etc. Some voters see education as an issue of paying taxes for "other people's kids."
And to make things worse, the times when a college level education was the key to career success appear to be gone. Instead of shelling out the equivalent of a compact car four years in a row to be guaranteed a prime place in the job market, college graduates are saddled with debt and unable to find good paying jobs. And the plethora of garbagy for-profit colleges did more than their part in luring people in to take their training-based programs with little chance of the job payoff at the end.
I can see why as a country many have become disillusioned with education, but if we continues to let third world countries eat our lunch on math, science and reading comprehension, in 50 years people will look back on today as a golden age.
