Is sending a text message SO important, that we through caution to the wind and send a text message, even when driving, or climbing? Really?

Alaska woman falls off 60-foot cliff while texting

KODIAK, Alaska – Emergency responders in Kodiak say they had to overcome the challenges of a cliff as well as an incoming tide to rescue a woman who fell 60 feet onto rocks.
Maria Pestrikoff survived the fall Sept. 17 and is recovering in an Anchorage hospital.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports she slipped as she was texting on her phone at the same time she tried to toss a cigarette butt over the cliff edge.

Too bad she didn't win. The Darwin Award. The world needs less stupid people like her.

At least she wasn't driving and taking out a bus load of children.

The title of this thread is misleading. The texting is not what was dangerous here. Chances are that if she was trying to take a bite out of a bigmac or life weights while trying to throw a bud off a cliff, the results would have been the same.

It's not misleading at all. People are not thinking about what they are doing because, "They have to text someone". Besides, she wasn't trying to eat, or lift weights, or smoke a bud, she her attention away from remaining safe on a cliff to hold her phone and send a text message...

People are reading and sending text messages, oblivious to the danger it's putting them in.

More proof that the schools have failed to teach reading comprehension and critical thinking. Causation and correlation. Cause and effect.

I bet breathing is dangerous, also; everyone who's ever fallen off a cliff was breathing right before they fell.

Texting should be punished with jail time first offence and escalate from there. There has been a rash of wrecks where a car is stopped at light/sign and another car rams them in the rear. You can put two and two together on what the cause was. Just yesterday I saw 2 cars slowing and swerving on the highway, and with my own eyes saw them looking down and texting. This is getting to be a big problem considering I live in the sticks.

I observed a young woman walking on a city street while texting. She was concentration so hard on her text she walked straight inot a street light pole then fell on her butt on the rebound. Then she started cursing the pole. At first I was concerned that she was injured but when the cursing started I could not stop laughing.
