It really does seem like the difference between the two is bigger than just a position on issues. There seems to be a fundamental personality difference. I cannot put my finger on it exactly. If you had to single out ONE distinction that defines a Republican or a Democrat, what would it be?

There really aren't that many differences between Republicans and Democrats. The Republican party has a tremendous history and have been a net benefit for this nation.

The problem is the rise of extremist conservatives. I think this rise is tied up to America's original sin of slavery, and it is shame.

Sadly, the Republican party is becoming defined by sort of an ethnic racial identity of older Americans that in many ways sees their very understanding of America being destroyed by those people.

It was bound to happen, but it is causing the Republican party to drift further right ward. To be against very good Republican ideas because those ideas use the government to help some of those people.

Lib act off emotions. Conservatives are more logic based.

The fundamental personality difference is that Republicans are conservative and Democrats are liberal.

The fundamental political difference is that Republicans want less government and Democrats want more.

(greatly simplified)

Republicans want-

smaller government
lower taxes
fewer entitlements
less regulations
enforcement of immigration laws
value fiscal issues over social issues
expansion of domestic coal, oil and oil shale exploration
support the rights of the individual over the government

Democrats want-

bigger government
higher taxes
more entitlements
more regulations
lack of enforcement of immigration laws
value social issues over fiscal issues
oppose expansion of domestic coal, oil and oil shale exploration
support the rights of the government over the individual

One word says it all. Rhetoric. The rhetoric they use to get elected. beyond that there is very little differnnce between the parties. It is all about power and control.
Then you have the hardliners. Swap the name of the target and its all the same.
