If she's exchanging sexual services for money or goods; she is, by definition, a prostitute. That certainly doesn't mean she's damaged in any way. I think the sex-worker industry (even if it's done on a freelance basis) is a perfectly legitimate pursuit for an adult when entered into by responsible choice, and when one has prepared themselves for the potential cultural and social repercussions.
as far as I know there is quite a large scene in Jamaica, where middle aged women pay to have beach hunks.

Aside from your example (Caribbean islands are the primary choice of American and Canadian women), there are numerous women in The UK and other more affluent European nations who travel to Greece and Spain for the same purpose. I would guess that it's a combination of factors at play: women today are less likely to be married, they have a greater sense of sexual freedom, and their growing numbers in the professional classes provide them with more disposable income.
The law is steeped in Christian or other orthodox moralities, and is usually a hangover from past eras in which religion reigned supreme.
