Jon Hubbard, a Republican member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, has written a new book in which he says slavery was "a blessing" for African-Americans, among other questionable statements.
Hubbard, a first term Republican from Jonesboro, Ark., makes a series of racially charged statements in the self-published book, including saying that integration of schools is hurting white students, that African slaves had better lives under slavery than in Africa, that blacks are not contributing to society, and that a situation is developing the United States which is similar to that of Nazi Germany.
“… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.” (Pages 183-89)
Of course, it was a blessing. Sure, my ancestors may have be enslaved, beaten and killed, fundamentally violating their rights as Americans. let alone as human beings. I'd like to thank Mr. Hubbard for correcting my wrongheaded view of American history.
Obviously it is better to live as a slave and to see everyone evolve into citizens over time instead of all dying in Africa on the losing end of tribal warfare.
Slavery was wrong, but almost none of the current black population in America would be alive anywhere today without people being sold into slavery instead of just being outright killed in tribal warfare.
Instead of slaughter, fellow tribes sold each other for gain.
To bad we kill 500,000 black babies a year today with Planned Parenthood and others through abortion. Where is the Democrat outcry over that?
The 'blessing in diguise' line may be defensible but at best is a stupid faux pas, like telling Oscar Pistorius that his not having feet is a blessing in disguise. I find more troubling the statement that black students are hurting white students. You'd have to really stretch to defend that one. This guy is either a David Duke adherent, or the dumbest f*&^ ever to occupy public office, and I doubt that it is the latter.
But this guy will be disavowed & ostracized at the upper levels of the GOP. The difference between Ds & Rs is that a Spike Lee can say "I give interracial couples a look. Daggers. They get uncomfortable when they see me on the street...." yet go on to have an honored seat at the Dem convention and be pals with Pres. Obama. Spike Lee Hosts President Obama Fundraiser, Tweets Photos & Commentary
Neither Spike Lee nor Hubbard are welcome in the Republican Party after making these sorts of statements.

You say that this isn't tolerated in the upper levels of the GOP, but Mitt Romney went to fundraiser hosted by Donald Trump who has made statements in support of birtherism. How did Mitt defend this? By saying "You know, I don't agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don't all agree with everything I believe in. But I need to get 50.1 percent or more and I'm appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people". Mitt admitted to be willing the pander to birther crowd as long as it helps him get votes.
Nor is this the only example of Mitt appearing with questionable people
This is a duplicate thread, this was debated the other day.
I'll say again, do African Americans today not have it better then many of the Africans in their country now? There is a reason why most of the slaves didn't go to Liberia.
Now, I'm not saying slavery was good, that the ends justify the means, or anything like that.
But to not acknowledge that African Americans have it a lot better then Nigerians, is to ignore reality.
The slaves had it terrible. Their decendents, it was a blessing in disguise.
