You know who else was an appointee to the UN general assembly? Shirley Temple, in the 60s. She then became a very real diplomat as ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.
You know what separates Shirley Temple from Cheryl Saban? A Ph.D. Temple did not even have a college degree - her donations and advocacy in the Republican party launched her into a diplomatic career.
Not that I think that this type of dealing is OK, but frankly, it's par the course. Many cushy diplomatic spots are held by campaign contributors.
