Watching the debate last night reminded me of one of my pet theories about communication and modern US politics. Have you ever wondered why conservatives dominate talk radio, while liberals dominate newspapers and TV news? I have posted about it here and there, and never gotten any response sufficiently compelling to dissuade me from my own pet theory. Namely that liberals excel at one way communication, whether writing, film-making, or oratory, while conservatives excel at interactive communication whether debates, talk radio, or internet forums.

Liberals are oriented towards emotion. They are better with words and art. They are more eloquent and more creative. Conservatives are oriented towards logic, hard reality, and numbers. They're more logical and more hard-nosed. That relentless pursuit of logic and numbers gives us the advantage in interactive communication.

This is an oversimplification, of course but generally I think it's true. It's no coincidence that engineers and economists tend to be conservative, while liberals own Hollywood and the music business. And it explains why Romney won the debate last night.
