I paid 3.66 today........... a long ways from the .30 a gallon I once paid, but I can also remember my mothers 66 Mustang, with a sticker price around 2,600 and my 1973 Mach 1 was a bit over $3000.
Yep. In 1968 five bucks would get me three packs of cigarettes and enough gas to get to Myrtle Beach and back home.
My 1973 Toyota was $2366.00 brand new. $700 down and payments of $60.53 a month for three years. Four dollars worth of gas and you had to burp it, but you were ready for a 400 mile cruise.
Things haven't changed all that much. They just moved the decimal over a little bit to account for inflation.
I live in California ... and you have absolutely NO IDEA what you are talking about.
California gas prices are not related to the rest of the country.
California refineries produce a special "Summer" blend of gas to keep emissions low during warm months, and reduce smog, which is a major problem here in California.
When a California refinery shuts down for any reason, it only affects California gas stations ... not other states.
And THAT is what happened here in California.
A California refinery had a problem which caused a major supply shortage of this "special blend" in California gas stations, and caused gas prices to rise substantially over the last few days (basic economics: Supply versus Demand).
This California refinery issue has absolutely NOTHING to do with prices of gas in the rest of the country.
Most other states have been seeing gas prices drop during the past few weeks!
Try reading THIS ARTICLE and you will see exactly why gas prices are rising here in California:
A web of refinery and transmission problems is to blame, analysts said. The situation is compounded by a pollution law that requires a special blend of cleaner-burning gasoline from April to October, said Denton Cinquegrana, executive editor of the Oil Price Information Service, which helps AAA compile its price survey.
“We use the phrase ‘the perfect storm,’ and you know what, this current one makes those other perfect storms look like a drizzle. I don’t want to scare anyone, but this is a big problem,” Cinquegrana said. “Run-outs are happening left and right.”
Among the recent disruptions, an Aug. 6 fire at a Chevron Corp. refinery in Richmond left one of the region’s largest refineries producing at a reduced capacity, and a Chevron pipeline that moves crude oil to Northern California also was shut down.
