Ericka Sóuter I have always been astonished by the number of kids diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder -- especially boys. Nearly 10 percent of children 4 to 14 reportedly have ADHD. That's 5.4 million kids!

Keeps the kids zombied out at school..makes for better classroom management.

Seriously though, it's been going on for years. My son had a behavior problem in school (5th grade).
Principal was convinced he had ADD or some variation. His pediatrician thought otherwise.
It took ME asking questions about his classes to find out he only acted out in the free for all classes...music and gym where 4 classes of 5th graders were in the same room. In his structured classes he had no problem.
Shoved that in the Principal's face and he was all "Oh, we didn't see that". Once identified some actions were put in place and that was that. ADD my foot.

Now I'm in the schools in teaching positions and it's unbelievable how many kids go to the office to "take their medicine" every day..some even twice a day.

Yeah, way too many people play armchair professional when it comes to things like this. I know that when I was a kid I went to a specialist and we went through a series of tests and procedures to fully diagnose me as ADHD, but so many people don't. I've heard from many people about how they mention their kid is acting distracted or whatever to their doctor and Boom, scrip for Ritalin or Adderall or whatever. It's absurdist. Some parents see it as a free ticket to reducing their responsibilities, but really in this pill popping culture that we have in America where everyone wants a pill to make every single problem they have go away, are we really surprised.

Too Fat? Here's a pill
Too Sad? Pill
Kid annoying you? PILL!

No, it doesn't. It makes for a room full of zombies. That said, there are kids that really are ADHD and really do need medicating. You can tell the difference because the real McCoy are kids who try to behave and are generally very pleasant but who have some part of their body always in motion. Generally if you give them a way to be in constant motion that doesn't disrupt everyone else's learning they become a non-issue.

I hope YOU worked with your son on what he should do to control his behavior in those unstructured classes. Since it isn't ADHD, he should be as capable of behaving as the other kids.

ADD meds are amphetamines, which is a stimulant. Trust me, if a kid actually has ADD/ADHD the taking of an amphetamine will speed up that area of the brain associated with self control and allows the child self control they would not normally have. It doesn't turn them into zombies.

That's not to say that a lot of kids are not misdiagnosed, mine had their diagnosis at the hand of a neuropsychologist.

Yes, once identified some actions at school and at home helped to correct it.
He had a rough 6th grade (behavior and transition to middle school) but was OK by 7th grade.
He's 21 now so this is not something new that has been going on.."It's ADD/ADHD, quick put them on drugs".

I have said in the past and I will say it again. ADHD does NOT exist. It's a disorder that was created by money-grubbing doctors to make a million dollar industry off adults and children with extremely upbeat and active personalities. It's natural for them to be the way they are! The human race is made up of billions of people. We are not all made to be boring and slow. People with ADHD were made to be that way to entertain the rest of us. Like all people, as children, they need to be disciplined to turn out into functioning normal adults who can contain themselves appropriately.

Default News, Drugging Your 'ADHD' Kid Could Be Lazy Parenting.

Agree, I had a friend, his kids were drugged for this, they did terrible in school, they grew up, both stopped the drug and they turned into productive young adults, both of them now are anti drugging your children believers.

Which is harder?

~ Teaching children how to control themselves like they did a couple of generations ago

-or-

~ Giving them drugs that turn them into veggies

Our government tells us how to raise our children so is it any wonder they are screwed up?

It actually is very real, and if your child actually has it, you know what I mean.

I guess the best demonstration in MY eyes, was my oldest used to love to play Duck Hunt. Never got passed level 3, the first weekend my child was on the medication, she got to level 54 on duck hunt. My daughter was able to focus on the game, instead of being distracted every time the cat ran by, or a door opened. Her grades went to straight A's. BTW, she graduated from college Summa *** Laude.

Again, it's used as a catch all issue for a lot of stuff, but it is VERY real, and for those who are actually affected by it, the medication is extremely beneficial.
