You seem to be living in your own little world so keep right on living there. Your kids and there kids will not, I promise you that. It's not "the internet" that cares, it's everyone using it. And that will be everyone sooner or later. Including you since you are here...and more so with your kids and theirs. It's happened, it can't be stopped. But new rules and laws will be created and enforced becasue "we" can't control ourselves. We never can.

What I'm saying is the wimp way of living, "create more laws" is one of the reasons American prisons are overflowing and America has the unique distinction of having more people locked up in it's jails than North Korea, China and Venezuela combined.....

I disagree; she killed herself because she was relying on others for her sense of self-worth. Sadly, she demanded too much from others.
I really don't want to make light of the child's experience, but she's gone, and there are other kids out there in the same situation. I seriously think that people should stop raising kids as if people are good.
I'm sure I'll be labeled as, "heartless" as well but this is exactly what we need to be doing. Cramming laws down every one's throat is not the answer. What was written above is a big part of the answer. We also need to teach our kids about their own self worth, their strength and to be able to stand up to words. Words have no meaning unless you give them meaning.
Of course I care that this girl took her life, that is very sad. But enacting more laws to try to control other people is not the answer: IT DOESN'T WORK! We cannot force people to be nice. All we can do is teach our kids how to be better and above all of that.
There's a reason you rarely hear children say things like racial epithets. We as a society -- from teachers, to parents, to school administrators, to everyone -- have drawn a line in the sand that calling someone the n-word, s-word, f-word, etc. will NOT be tolerated. We don't excuse that kind of language or thinking as part of growing up, or kids being kids. We've been so succesful in instilling this message into our youth that even the ones that want to say it, only feel comfortable saying it in the confines of their group.
Why can't we stigmatize bullying the same way?
They don't? Are you sure about that? I hear a LOT of that from kids. Go to YouTube, pick some random video and read the comments. I'll bet you if you took a survey, you would find out most of them are young adults, kids, children. And they are firing the racial epithets out like you would not believe!
Go sit on a public bus one day that kids take to get to school. Go sit in a mall. Go to the movies that they go to, when they go.

How nice do you think people would be at a red light if there was no law, would you stop and give me the right of way, don't think so. You are a good person just like I and most people but laws are needed to keep people in line. Laws are fine as long as there is balance.

I wonder when we pass enough laws so that all American citizens are forced to act "in an appropriate manner" will the only American citizens not in prison be our politicians passing these laws?

People don't have thin skins anymore, they have no skin, and everywhere they touch or reality touches them is course sandpaper......
I was bullied for the first couple years of school because of my parents' insistence that I be a wallflower. After I got maimed at school one fateful afternoon, my parents put me in martial arts and in time, I savagely beat every kid who'd wronged me. Thus started me down a path where if anyone tried to bully or intimidate me, I'd destroy them. Indeed, by high school, I was feared to the point where the campus "bullies" wouldn't dare try anything against me.
I think that the "bullying awareness" thing lately has gotten to be a little bit overblown. However, it's not without some merit. In Amanda Todd's case, let me point out that:
1. She was a girl.
2. She was a teenager.
3. Judging by pictures of her, she was a short, part-Asian girl of extremely slight build.
4. She was a girl.
5. The police evidently failed to stop the individual(s) who were distributing what falls under the legal definition of child porn of her.
There are certainly some situations in which a kid just needs to put on big boy pants and stand up for himself. There are others where it's a girl, or it's a kid who will get creamed. Saying that they just need to "beat the crap" out of the people who are wronging them is a simplistic, bumper-sticker slogan non-solution.

And when this totally politically correct society comes up against another country that treats political correctness and turn the other cheek mentality as a weakness, a plum ripe to be picked?
Bullying has been around since the dawn of man. It won't stop, so people better learn better ways to cope with it.
Maybe parents should teach their kids to stand up and fight back against bullies- instead of infantilizing them and teaching them to think of themselves as perpetual victims of the world with no power to help themselves -then maybe there wouldn't be so many suicides of late?
I think it's far more troublesome that teenagers today are so weak and easily manipulated and susceptible to suggestion.
