Gay marriage has nothing to do with churches whatsoever (or religion at all for that matter). Civil marriage and religious marriage are separate, unrelated things. Civil marriage is a legal construct for couples who wish to form a joint legal entity defined by the legal rights conferred by civil marriage law. Religious marriage is whatever a particular religious institution wants it to be. Any church can marry -- or refuse to marry -- any couple, or group of people, or group of people and various animals or objects it damn well wants. Allowing gay couples to contract civil marriages under the law has nothing to do with that at all.
