Yes, I know many, many people without health insurance. In fact the vast majority of people I know have no form of health insurance whatsoever.

If you need your appendix out then you need it out. You have very limited ability to go 'shopping' for the best deal. So, to a very large extent you are at the mercy of the health care provider. So who protects the public interest here? How can the patient know he/she is not being gouged by an unscrupulous provider?

No one protects, apparently.

Another example of why the health system in US isnt working for many. For a 'first world' nation, the disparity is pretty bad.

My dept has over 50 BSN/MSN RN's with advanced degrees and certifications just to fight the health insurance companies...their salaries alone could cover a boat load of health care. You just wouldn't believe the hoops the insurance companies require to get payment. Anyone remember the book and movie by John Grisham called "The Rainmaker? It may be a "fictional" account of big insurance but it's real ohhh so real.

The biggest cause of bankruptcy is catastrophic health issues even with health insurance...you could be only one heart attack away from the poor house even with "good" insurance.
Therein lies the problem. Tiime wasted by hospital staff to 'fight insurance co's' (Im sure I know a few R.N.'s who enjoy working with patients, as well as dr's. they arent there to do red tape).

Its a broken system. Capitalism does not work when you are treating patients.

So will you adopt me so I can move to Canada. I'm from Oregon and went up to BC and other parts of your lovely country quite a bit. I'd immigrate but I've got nothing so Canada won't take me.

Same here. I've thought many a times I'd like to move to Canada. I don't think they would take me either.

Thank you for posting this. I took the test and it said no I can't immigrate to Canada. I've checked around on this before, and it always looked like I just didn't meet the qualifications. I wish I did. I don't make or have enough money and am not a highly qualified person in areas of importance.

You should move to Minnesota. If Romney wins we are going to secede and join Canada

With the way insurance works, a certain percentage have to not use it in order to provide funds for that percentage of those that do.
Otherwise, none of us would bother.
Oh, so a healthier person like me should pay for someone like you? How very socialist of you. And a single payer system like England has is bad how again?

I don't have health insurance because its pointless. The insurance at work is okay at best. I'm sulfite sensitive and the main reason I'd end up in the hospital is because I would need treatment for breathing problems due to my sensitivity. The insurance at work doesn't cover nebulizer or albuterol, my coworker who ended up with pneumonia found that out the hard way. Why pay for something that won't cover the bills when I need it? I could put the money to other uses. Like new glasses or a visit to the dentist or the new tires my car needs.

When I need healthcare I go to the urgent care clinic and pay out of pocket. Its much more affordable than paying $200 a month and still having copays on the rare occasion I have to visit the doctor.

I do not agree with the idea that someone such as myself should be paying for geezers or fat people who stuff their faces full of twinkies should be paying insurance for "those that need it." Nor do I think it is appropriate that I should have to pay insurance when I do not need it via government coersion.

So lets say you find you have cancer and a course of chemotherapy is $65,000. Or you get a ruptured appendix and the hospital wants $15,000. Can you afford it? f not, what happens? Do you just curl up and die?
