First off (as another proud Illinoisan), I am glad Lincoln preserved our union but it got me wondering what if the South won? How would the South and North be off today? I am sure there will be some spirited opinions, that's fine, but let's do keep it civil.
First off, the "South" couldn't win. Period.
Now that we're in fantasy, had the Confederacy "won" their independence, it wouldn't have taken long for the two nation-states to reestablish very high levels of commerce, to the point of practical (even if not political) re integration. IMO, we'd see two "Provencial" governments w/their various "states"...
I guess in Minnesota where I grew up I would have heard a lot more "Dad gums" than You betcha's". I know the church dinners would be better. Most people would prefer BBQ chicken over lutefisk and the those who disagree would be sentenced to litter cleanup on the roads (even in winter)! However, these days MN is a much improved food place.
Seriously, I do not know what would happen...just having fun with the thread. I'll let the "know it all's" resolve it!
If the south had won, however unlikely, they would have experienced a very rough first few years, especially due to most European countries refusing to recognize them as a separate country, establishing commerce and trade would be difficult, thus causing their economy to suffer. It would not surprise me all that much if after several years of their economy going down the south somehow tried to rejoin the union, and keep slavery out of the constitution.
We would be a more conservative, God-fearing nation. Atlanta would be the nation's capital and Charleston would be the major Port of Entry. Jazz and Soul music would have dominated the nation alot sooner with brilliant musicians. There would be no political correctness; Blacks would not be known as African-Americans, but as Americans just like the Whites.
Sweet iced tea would be the national drink and barbeque would be a weekend culinary delight nationwide. College Football would become competitive in places like Vermont and Rhode Island. The sports media would be biased toward the Atlanta Braves as they are now with the New York Yankees. Coca-Cola would be what it is already, a southern concoction served world-wide.
Women would have a drawl like Rosalyn Carter. Manners and etiquette would be superior to that of today. You, yankee, would say hello when someone greets you with a hello, how are ya. There would be no unions and public schools would be the finest in the world. Manuafacturing would have remained in the USA with plenty of jobs to go around. NASCAR would have branched out far sooner.
There would have been more opportunity within the Black community, more success stories like Condaleeza Rice and Andrew Young. The military would have been mighty as it is now. Christianity and the story of Christmas would be respected and celebrated, moral values would be stronger as would the family. Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance would start the school day.
It would have been a beautiful country.
Guess us whites would have been washing a lot of Cadilacs if the south could have figured out how to make cars out of cotton.
Just kidding.
I for one, am glad the North won due to my belief that no human should be enslaved by another. I also believe we would have been taken over by another country, probably England, because the south didn't have the expertise of manufacturing, industry, etc. They may have obtained that eventualy but not soon enough to prevent an overtake.
The one thing I don't like is the fact that some blacks still hate present day whites for how blacks were treated by our long ago forebearers. We didn't have nothing to do with what happened generations ago.
I'm not going to say "some of my best friends are black". That is over used for the convenience of getting along. In my 66 yrs I have had friends of both races. Still do. And I've had people of both races I didn't like very much either.

^ This is really funny!
Makes me all the more glad the South lost!
First off, the posts stating that in MN people would be eating barbecue, implying that the South winning meant the entire US was ruled by the South, is so silly. They were seeking independence and a break away from the USA. The South winning means they become an independent nation from the US.
Given the current state of this country, I wish they had won, and I wish I didn't have to live in the same country as Southerners. I have zilch in common with them. People down there don't even believe in having background checks for gun purchases. They mix religion into every political cause.
I'm tired of having their crazy, religious, extreme right wing politicians have a say in my life. I can only imagine how much better my region would be today if we were seperate from them. I'm hoping it still may happen in the near future.
