Our small business didn’t see 18 tax cuts. We didn’t see any. Here’s the reality of government and small business as we have experienced it.
- Government rarely supports small business. Incentives are few and usually take the form of taking less money away from small businesses. Any reduction is soon replaced.
- Government rarely supports a specific small business directly. When it does (ex. small business loans, trade shows, classes, etc.), there are strings attached (fees, paperwork, disclosure, collateral, liens, etc.)
- Government burdens and impedes small business through multiple and layers of taxes and fees.
- Government burdens and impedes small business through multiple types of regulation.
- Government persecutes and punishes small businesses that do not 100% comply with regulations. Most times, small business non-compliance is unintentional, including causes like lack of resources, lack of income, etc. In these situations, government absolutely does not support small business. It does the exact opposite,
Small businesses are vital to the government and to the economy (revenue, jobs, innovation, etc.). However, they are very vulnerable. And when small businesses survive, it is often regardless or in spite of government. Small business has virtually no voice in the government (little/no time/money to lobby). What we hear is not what we experience.
The relationship between government and small business is very unhealthy. As long as small business is used and abused, small businesses will continue to fail, scale back, or simply walk away – taking employment with us.
Government is a vampire bat. Small business is a cow being sucked dry by the bat, growing weaker and more sick as the bat gets fat and happy. I commend you small business owners for succeeding at all in spite of goverment.
I own a small business, very small. At a minimum, I have 19 reports to file, per year. I can only imagine what it gets like as you get over the five employee threshhold.
(ex. small business loans, trade shows, classes, etc.), there are strings attached (fees, paperwork, disclosure, collateral, liens, etc.)
Imagine that: a lender requiring fees, paperwork, disclosures, etc. from a prospective borrower. I never heard of such a thing.
