The only problem with your assumption is that Obama supported al Qaeda in Libya, as well as Hamas in Palestine, and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Obama is the only pro-terrorist President in the nation's history. Thankfully, not for much longer.

It was the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi, with Obama's illegal support. The LIFG has been linked directly to Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, and Obama fought on their behalf. So much for being "committed to crushing al Qaeda."

It's an ideology fueled by hatred wrapped in a religious justification, and it doesn't matter what our foreign policy is, or our presence around the world, they will find a reason to proliferate their uncompromising, radical Islamic beliefs. And when the smoke settles in Libya the news will come out that the US had been smuggling arms into Syria and falling into the hands of radicals and that information was reported October 2012.
To answer the OP's question; If I were an al Qaida operative I would retire to Abu Dhabi and disappear into the sand. Of course many of them are not this sensible.
