As a Capitalist society, we NEED a poorly paid underclass to perform certain functions.

Does this bother you that even though we must have them, we offer them few benefits and practically no social safety net?

Not at all, since we also offer them equality of opportunity. I cite my family, which was once part of that poor underclass.

We all have opportunity...some of us chose to use it, and some don't, thus the underclass...now I know there are unpreventable circumstances to every story that also puts people there, and those are the ones I feel for...well, I honestly do feel for everyone who struggles, just some chose to live that way.

Yes, it bothers me that we have them and yet don’t have benefits or a safety net for them. Yes this country needs them, and yet we (most Americans) abuse them with low pay and no benefits. Most of them are hard working and make an effort to support their families. Most of them don’t have a chance to become something better or make something more out of their lives. Yes there are many who do, but much of that becomes just lucky. Those who go to school, or get more training, or start their own business are lucky. Others work two or three jobs and don’t have time to attend school, or don’t have any way to get backing on starting their own business. They are always just close enough to the carrot but not able to get it. They can make an extra buck and then something happens that takes it away from them.

Yes, but for everyone that moves up, we need a new one to replace them

the reason so many of us can live a good/decent life is cause we make so many live a poor one.

we HAVE to have people pick fruits/veggies at low wages
we HAVE to have people clean up after us for low wages
or take care of our elderly
or children
or drive us around
or serve us food
or
or
or...

We offer the benefits of a society that allows upward mobility for those who work hard, and encourages education for all--free as far as high school. Those who are lower economically can get a lot of help to go to college. That is a pretty good benefit right there.

Citizens of the US who work at poorly paid jobs can receive Section 8 housing benefits, food stamps, and help with day care.

Since we will always have immigration, though it should be done legally, we will always have people desperately trying to get to the US to work in the poorly paid jobs.

So no, I don't feel that bad. We are still the land of opportunity. When opportunity knocks, though, you have to answer the door.

Oh oh, this isn't going to turn into an argument on how we need the illegals is it?

its not just immigrants

we have them domestically as well

even if every immigrant in the country disappeared tomorrow, we would still need an underclass to do these jobs.

just doesn't seem fair that we ask of them so much, and give them so little.

We make no one do anything, They choose to do these things -- often, because they are escaping an even worse situation in their home country.

If you want to blame someone, blame the government of Mexico, which uses the US as its own massive welfare system.

Let's keep it domestic, and not resort to moving the thread to the immigration forum.

And as for the question, I am probably all wet, but I think everyone deserves a fair wage, benefits, and a life-style that does not place them into an underclass.
