Those hand crank radios and flashlights need to be checked every year because they do go bad. Had to throw out my two radios/flashlights that were hand crank. They're good for a few years. Don't store the spare flashlights with batteries inside. That acid will leak out and destroy the flashlight. Chang those batteries at least once a year. If you choose to use emergency candles (some last 1,000 hours) or oil lanterns, PLEASE TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS WITH THEM TO PREVENT HOME FIRE!!!. Oil lanterns offer long lasting and easily controlled light. When used properly, it can also be safe. Candle are more dangerous because they can easily fall over and set things on fire. Best to use all LED flashlights and LED lanterns to make the batteries last longer. For those getting MREs, they don't taste bad but be careful. Each packet contains 2,000 calories, little more than an average person's recommended daily caloric intake. Eat one and you have enough calories for the entire day. You'll feel starving before the day's over but you'll be fine.
I'll say this: out of how many people who DID prepare; how many were caught with their pants down? People gotta remember there are MILLIONS of people in the NYC and NJ areas. Also things there were pretty "good" for 3 days: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It's now Thursday.

Well this is how disasters go. People have some stock piles as people don't shop for their next meal right before they need it in general.
As time goes on resources are depleted, angst increases and man's animalistic nature starts to prevail.
If this went on for 2 - 3 weeks you'd see truly how pathetic and instinctual humans can be.
When Hunting in November in Colorado we camp where it gets down to 5-10 degrees some years with snow. Warm clothing and a Mr Heater keep us nice and warm for a week. Makes no sense to me. A group of guys can get together and put in enough stuff to last two weeks in the harsh Colorado Rocky Mountains for two weeks in a tent plus packing it 1000 miles from home. And these frigging people couldnt even get some stuff together for a few days in their own homes?
Now granted the people who had their crap washed away that is tough. But you could easily be ready for that as well. Mother nature is a harsh teacher sometimes.
We don't have to worry about the cold after our hurricanes. Those propane heaters have helped many hunters and fishermen around here.

I agree, but I am not surprised either.
This past September Alaska was also hit by a Category 1 typhoon that caused a lot of damage over the majority of the State. Areas were without power for a week. Landslides blocked the one and only road to or from the Kenai Peninsula. Rivers and creeks all flooded their banks. The storm surge hit southeastern Alaska the hardest.
Yet there was no rioting, fist fights, murders over resources, or looting. Alaskans help Alaskans in need. In our case the adage goes, "when seconds count, the government could be days away."

The problems in NY/NJ due to Sandy pose some questions to my interest. Considering the bashiing of Bush due to the problems in New Orleans during Katrina, and complaints of FEMA, will people in the northeast affected by Sandy offer like criticisms for Bronco Bamma? Or will the conditions result in some maturity and understanding of the problems inherent in catastrophe?
I'm sorry for the problems victims of either hurricane have to face and wish them the best. Hopefully they'll learn from the experiences and set more realistic expectations for government assistance and just exactly what that might be. They can probably start with being glad they're not at the bottom of a pile of sand washed in with the storm surge. Especially the ones whose mayor didn't encourage them to get the F*** OUT.
This area was under mandatory evacuation. police drove down the streets announing it and even went door to door in areas.
Have we actually created a society of people who cannot take care of themsleves? They are so dependent on the gov tit, that three or four days of expectation of self reliance puts them into a tail spin? This is what comes of entitlement programs where the only qualification for benefits is begging the loudest. We created these people who cannot and will not take care of themselves...or their children...or their parents...or even their pets.
I suggest a good dose of Social Dwarwinism...survival of the fittest. You can't take care of yourself? No food for idiots.
Is this how Obama liberals act when they dont get their way?
They drop their environmentalist masks when desperation comes knocking. If it were possible to modernize transport methods of services and utilities they would be easier to restore.
So once things return to normal... so do environmentalists, with no improvements.
Where are all the folks who sit around giggling about the tin foil hat wearing preppers who are afraid of their own shadows??
