Physics. If you put a surge barrier next to NYC you back up into the LI sound which floods Long Island and Connecticut. That is unacceptable. You might be able to block the narrows but that is only a small portion of the problem.

The NY harbor is feed from both sides of Long Island.

The Dutch have no where near the coastline involved in the US. I doubt they have diked 100 miles of coast...that would get a part of Long Island.

And the dutch got a reward...25% of the Netherlands. We get to keep what we have.

Ain't a rational expenditure.

London is inland so it is easier, Venice would more a model for NYC though.

Just rebuild further inland. Government dependent types can be relocated to higher ground away from the beaches very easily.

Even "rich" areas of the country need poor workers to provide services. So, do you think we should have free rail systems to truck the poor workers or the "government dependent" as you call them into the cities every day so they can provide services? If not, then living on the coast isn't going to be very easy without all of the minimal pay jobs we need every day.

People in Florida sometimes drive 30, 40 miles one way to work in resort areas. Thats Florida, not New York though. To many people live there to have to rely on cars for that need, you need trains. Seems like many people are already doing that, living in Queens, and other places in higher ground areas that weren't really effected by the storm, and that most of the houses I see with damage, are much better houses then most people can afford.

You cant just move 8,000,000 people and rebuild the city elsewhere, that would be much more expensive than repairing the damage over and over again.

Once the Agenda 21 folks get their way that is exactly what will be going on. Build their little bee hives for em to live in and truck em around via hi speed rail to where they are needed to "proved services".
